Soviet daily reports describe heavy aerial battles with 103 German planes shot down in a single day and 40000 German officers and men killed on the central front between March 23 and April 4. Moscow fronts show advances with 190+ localities seized and Smolensk area heavily contested as siege lines tighten.
British bombers attacked the Libyan desert region around Timimi Martube Derna and Bir el Hamarin as Axis forces retreated from Bir el Hamarin. Both sides reinforced positions near Tobruk and Gebel el Akdar while harbor facilities at Benghazi faced renewed strikes. Four German bombers were shot down over Malta.
New Delhi April 5. Louis Johnson White House envoy with Roosevelt letter to Indian leader injects urgency into India independence talks. Johnson met Cripps and Wavell as Cripps mission nears verdict. Congress and Moslem League show reluctance. final outcome expected soon.
London April 6 Daily Express quotes Mahandas K Gandhi as insisting he would not surrender India or fight Japan. He says he would let the Japanese land and then oppose them by non-violence, noting Indians are not armed. Gandhi also says he failed to win over close associates to his antiwar stance.
MOUNDSVILLE April 5 Gov Neely after a personal investigation said he would commute the death sentence of Howard Mitchell to life imprisonment. Mitchell, also known as Howard Mitchell, was to be hanged next Friday for the shotgun slaying of Walter Lambert at Big Foury McDowell County last August.
In Belfast on April 5 a harmless trio of incendiary time bombs exploded and more were found in a theater used by U S and British troops. A gun battle followed between police and an armed group. Authorities noted no direct link to the 1916 Easter rebellion. Hundreds of extra police were deployed as 1,500 troops guarded the scene.
President Roosevelt, with a head cold, missed Easter sunrise services at St Thomas Episcopal and Arlington National Cemetery. A crowd of several hundred gathered, including service members, to hear the Unknown Soldier tomb resurrection story as Vice President Wallace laid lilies at the tomb door.
New York on Easter Sunday presented a subdued Fifth Avenue as crowds wore uniform khaki and navy for men and conservative dresses for women. Service members dominated the parade while socialites stayed away. Bright red accents appeared with women’s non-priority hats and accessories, signaling wartime restraint amid the war mood.
United Nations forces credit American and Australian airmen with destroying at least 1 Japanese plane and damaging 20 others in two days of fierce air clashes near Darwin Port Moresby and Lae. Incidents include seven bombers attacking Darwin for the 13th time and a Japanese carrier strike on Port Moresby.
A group of senators led by Pepper of Florida and Lee of Oklahoma organizes to push a senate floor vote within two weeks on suspending the 40 hour week and restricting war industry activity. They seek to bypass the education and labor committee despite opposition from Thomas Ulah and Senate Democratic Leader Barkley. If enough senators back the general principles a labor measure may pass by April 20.

Colombo defense repelled a carrier borne Japanese assault aimed at Colombo and nearby airfields. RAF fighters and anti aircraft fire shot down or crippled 57 raiders. at least 27 planes fell, five suspected shot down, with 25 badly damaged. Losses to RAF described as slight.
A record Army Day parade is set in Charleston, the largest yet, featuring 15 Land units, military details, and delegations from local patriotic groups. Forming on Virginia Street to Ruifmer Avenue, the march begins at 10 a.m. under parade marshal Maj. John P. West and adjutant Capt. A. D. Pirnack. The procession will pass downtown, line Capitol and Lee streets for review before dignitaries and World War I veterans’ groups, with spectators from nearby communities and a Civil group 541 presence noted.
Tokyo dispatch reports Lt. Gen. Yoshitsugu Tatekawa, retiring Japanese ambassador to the Soviet Union, arriving at Manchouli, Manchukuo. He says Japan and Russia will adhere to the Soviet Japanese neutrality pact and notes Soviet war morale remains high under Stalin as they fight Germany.
American fortress bombers attacked Rangoon docks in Burma from new bases in India. Three fires were started and all planes returned safely. Earlier, daylight raids hit Fort Blair in the Andaman Islands, burning a Japanese cruiser and likely damaging two other ships.
Four French trawlers were attacked by British gunboats after the March 28 raid on St Nazaire dockyards, two believed to be the last. French authorities condemned the acts as savagery that bereaves many French fishing and maritime families with no military purpose.
In Boston on April 5 the 1st Army Corps area activated 211 posts for a one hour blackout drill across New England. No reason given for the test, following a similar alert after a wandering airplane incident two weeks earlier.
In Little Rock on Easter, Christ Episcopal Church rector Rev. W. P. Wisell led a prayer at the altar where MacArthur was baptized. The appeal asked divine guidance and strength for Gen Douglas MacArthur as he faces ongoing war. MacArthur and his staff attended Easter services in Australia as conferences continued.
An Easter sunrise service on the Capitol grounds attracted about 7,000 worshippers from 6:34 to 7 a.m. Pastor Dr. Joseph Clare Hoffman preached that despite war darkness, Christ’s resurrection testifies to a future dawn and God’s enduring purpose for free men. Lt Gen Johnston Waits Wright’s Philippine fighters clash with a large Japanese invasion fleet attempting to land troops and 75mm cannon on Bataan’s east coast. American Filipino artillery repelled the assault causing heavy Japanese casualties, though some ground was gained near Manila Bay as Corregidor shelled enemy positions.

Five persons were killed in a mid air collision of two planes that crashed in a residential section of Hialeah. The victims include Lt and Mrs D K Jones of Chicago, pilot William J Britton 25 of Miami, H B L Carruthers Jr 20 of Miami, Laurence Hartzell 25 of Milbank, Pa Bryn Mawr Carruthers and Hartzell were student filers.
