Appalachian coal negotiators from management and United Mine Workers set a Sunday meeting after ending a third week of talks on a wage and hour contract for 338,000 miners. No agreement emerged though leaders expressed hope for a quick resolution.
In heavy rain, fewer than 500 miners attended April 1 celebrations in Sophia Raleigh county and Shinnston where the parade and gathering were cut short. Talks continued in New York between John L. Lewis allied leaders and coal operators over a wage agreement after the 1937 Appalachian pact expired at midnight. Expected work stoppage loomed unless a new contract or extension was reached, with orders to return home pending New York results.
The scene remains tense after England and France promised to aid Poland if invaded. Chancellor Hitler spoke at the launch of a warship in Wilhelmshaven amid mounting international developments.

Richwood Ramp club plans an annual ramp feast at Camp Woodbine with about 150 attendees. A pre-event fish dinner featured ramps for dessert hosted by George D. Byrd, led by club president Dr. James McClung. Notables include 95-year-old Civil War veteran Peter Craig, with C C Eye sending word from Orange.
Four men riding in a sedan fell 75 feet near Crown Hill at 4 15 pm. Harry Eads 25 of Acme died en route to a hospital three others James Eads 24 Lawrence Eads 23 and Hubert Hartlett 18 were injured Hartlett in critical condition. All were taken to Charleston from East Bank after initial treatment near the wreck.

The program at Laidley field begins 6 30 a m with music chorus mass singing and a moment of silent prayer in Charleston's first civic Easter observance. Public invited.
