A broad roster of Chariton residents and visitors are noted after weekend travels to Des Moines Ottumwa Russell Atlanta and other towns. Many return from visits with relatives while others arrive to attend family gatherings and illnesses.
Fred Boland, longtime messenger for the C. B. & Q. telegraph office, has been promoted to night operator. Described as honest, hustling, and diligent, he rapidly advanced through steady effort. The Patriot joins friends in wishing him continued success and prompt service in his new duties.
A naked eye eclipse of interest occurs at Chariton opera house on Monday January 13 as C B Marvin presents the comedy A Wise Member with his acclaimed company. Manager Beem guarantees the merits of the attraction ahead of seats going on sale January 9.
William Haven, manager, warns that any employer visiting or patronizing saloons within three miles of the Inland Coal Company mines will be immediately discharged. He cites risk to future operations and labor relations in the county.
James Prendergast of Amato Bay Jamaica reports his daughter recovered from chest pains and cough in two days using Chamberlains Cough Remedy. He claims it wards off pneumonia and prevents cold complications. For sale by D Q Storie.
Last evening at the home of the bride’s parents in Hillsboro the marriage of E L Roth of Kansas City to Misa Ella Spray was performed by Rev F L Johnson before about seventy five guests. The couple, well known in Ottumwa and area, will reside in Kansas City after a short visit here. They arrived in Ottumwa today en route to their new home.
Editor W. H. Dewey and his mother arrived home Thursday night after a Texas trip. Their train wrecked on a burned bridge, destroying all but one sleeper. No serious injuries occurred as passengers huddled in one coach all night and the wreck was set ablaze but the coach was moved to safety.
An advertisement touts DeWitts Little Early Risers as a cure for chronic constipation. A user from Depauwa Indiana claims nine years of costiveness and reports best results after trying many remedies.
In the Nineteenth Century summary Wiliam C McIntosh and Dr Hjort with Dr Dahl argue sea resources are near inexhaustible. They report vast numbers of young fish, deep sea layers containing cod and haddock, and claim human activity cannot dent overall production.
An anecdote about Arthur T Hadley of Yale from a bicentennial event recounts his early eccentricity and lack of promise as a boy. A friend compares her son to Hadley, noting both were difficult, with a quip about Theodore Roosevelt’s LL D honor as a potential “other son.”
