Lucas County Teachers Association meeting in Russell
The Lucas County Teachers Association met in Russell on February 5 with fifty five teachers present and many Russell citizens. Highlights included papers on fractions and outdoor exercise, with addresses by Prof. Hollingsworth and Rev. Johnson. Fifty two Lucas county teachers enrolled, Chariton teachers rode in bob sleds, and a good dinner followed at Mrs. Van Dyke's.

Prentiss Dies at 81 in Bethany Missouri
General Benjamin Mayberry Prentiss died at his Bethany Missouri home on February 8 1901 at age 81 after months of declining health the paralytic cause. The famed Civil War and Mexican War veteran known as The Hero of Shiloh lectured in Chariton and was respected by many in the region.
