Minneapolis May 18 Judge Elliott found former mayor A. A. Ames guilty after appeals by his counsel. He is sentenced to six years at hard labor in the state penitentiary with a $19,000 bond accepted. He will not report to prison until the supreme court rules on his appeal.
Pekin reports China rejects including Manchurian towns in commercial treaties. Russia opposes opening Manchurian trade. The American minister proposed Mukden Harbin and a portion of the Yalu mouth be opened, but China remains firm.
Washington May 18 the state department received a long letter from Miss El ene M Stone demanding damages from the Turkish government for outrages by brigands who captured and held her prisoner in the Turkish empire she does not name an amount and the letter is written from Portage Ontario no prior claim was suggested in official correspondence
An official war office dispatch from Aden describes a hand to hand fight at Burrilli Somaliland on May 4 where the Abyssinian contingent cooperating with Brigadier General Manning’s advance defeated the Mad Mullah’s dervishes. Casualties: 300 dervishes killed, 21 Abyssinians killed.

Norman Butler, a ten year old boy who ran away from Aurora Illinois, was captured by Burlington chief of detectives Al Houston on the levee. He has been staying with his aunt Mrs Eliza Butler on West Hill for three days. The boy will remain in Burlington until his father comes to take him home.
Colfax May 20 George McNeilly eleven-year-old boy died after being crushed between railcars at the Colfax Northern crossing west of the depot. He had been warned away from the tracks and was not found for some time. He lived only a few minutes after rescue.
May 20 Oskaloosa report Mrs. Jessie Osborn seriously injured when her buggy ran into a sand screen on North Market Street. The vehicle overturned and she remained unconscious for hours, in precarious condition. Also notes a Cambridge drugstore robbery and other regional incidents.
