Length of Hog Intestines Shows Digestive Changes

Darwin noted food supplied by humans seemingly lengthens pig intestines. Cuvier quoted boar intestinal ratios, with wild at nine times body length, domestic at 13.5, Siam at 16. A study of 39 fattened hogs found small intestines 54 to 60 feet and large 13 to 16 feet, average body length 3.5 feet. The small alone is 16 to 19 times body length, combined about 21 times. Modern pigs may digest larger foods more completely and ingest more food than ancestors.
