CAPISTRANO BEACH Calif AP a 66 year old widow Alice Case rents near here while a house she ordered stands on the wrong lot. The builder, sub contractor and lot owner dispute who pays for the work and damages in a year of legal hassle.
Lawrence AP reports a Paramount television movie titled The Immortal based on James E. Gunn’s book The Immortals will air at 7 30 p m on ABC. Gunn, KU administrator for university relations, says the film diverges from the book though core ideas remain, and he has only seen parts of the screenplay and film.
Lawrence Kansas AP Chancellor E Laurence Chalmers of the University of Kansas says he favors selling cigarettes on campus. State Board of Regents bans tobacco sales at state schools yet he hopes to persuade the board to rethink the policy. He argues cigars should be barred but cigarettes could be allowed under a moral line.
Israel prime minister Golda Meir briefs President Nixon on economic and military needs. The White House says no immediate decision on more planes is required. Nixon praises the Israeli people and hopes for lasting peace. Differences noted focus on procedures rather than hardware requests as talks proceed with the Big Four to avert broader war.
Police moved in to arrest 103 protesters and clear a student occupied University of Michigan office building after a 12 hour takeover. Nine people were injured, minor damage reported, and two microphones plus recording tape were missing from the radio station. Regents voted to place a proposed campus bookstore under university administration.
President Nixon said he seeks a settlement in Vietnam before 1971 and warned that timetables for withdrawal would undercut peace talks. Saigon military spokesman denies Senator Proxmire’s claim that the Republic of Vietnam government is selling U S supplied weapons. He says talks are with a British firm for 200 000 obsolete arms, mostly made abroad, with U S parts dating to 1917. Purchases would render weapons nonoperable for scrap or souvenirs only.
Weather Bureau predicts sunny mild conditions with southerly winds 8 to 15 mph. Highs 74 to 81 today, around 80 Saturday, with overnight lows 44 to 63. Topeka area forecasts call for partly cloudy skies and continued warm pattern through weekend.
Kansas Attorney General Kent Frizzell seeks to dismiss the Highway Commission suit arguing the commission cannot sue the state. Wichita joins to oppose the act as unconstitutional with a hearing set for Oct. 3 before Judge William Carpenter. Frizzell had earlier ruled a freeway priority index provision invalid while the rest stood.
In La Paz a coup toppled President Luis Siles Salinas. Gen Alfredo Ovando Candia leads a left leaning military regime promising peasants reforms and industrial plans. Foreign Minister Gustavo Medeiros remains in New York at the U N General Assembly. In St Paul thieves broke into Town and Country store overnight and stole merchandise, sheriff reports.
Military spokesmen said six Green Beret officers will face public charges in the Thai Khaee Chuyen killing. The disclosure will name the alleged trigger man amid defense claims of CIA involvement and calls to dismiss charges. Attorneys for three accused Berets urge President Nixon to drop the case.
An intercepted message hints at creating a recipe for snail stew. The note mentions someone possibly named Cha and proposes culinary experimentation.
In north Miami the giant African snail infestation spreads across about 13 blocks with up to 20,000 snails feeding on foliage and calcium. Florida Agriculture officials including Commissioner Doyle Conner visit the site to collect hundreds of snails and discuss containment.
