Courtroom gunfire kills two in South Dakota divorce hearing
In Rapid City a routine divorce proceeding ended in a gunfight leaving the wife, her lawyer, and injuring the judge. Ray Bivins, a tourist attraction owner, opened fire after alimony was set at more than $3,000. Bivins was subdued by deputy sheriffs after wounding the judge and killing the two.

Vegetables and Fruit Win for Chrismans at Fairs
The Garland Chrisman family of Thayer Kansas, eight miles southwest, farm 15 acres of garden and 20 acres of orchard with 400 apple and 400 peach trees. They earned 33 prizes on 53 entries at the Thayer Home Coming Picnic and Fair and won $85 at Mid-America Fair Topeka and $159.50 at Hutchinson State Fair. At Mid-America they took nine 1st place blue ribbons and multiple 2nd and 3rd place awards for apples onions peppers squash and more. At State Fair they earned ten 1st place blue ribbons for apples and vegetables, along with many other medals.

Shotgun and Cases Recovered by Chanute Police
A 16-year-old Chanute youth turned in a 12-gauge shotgun and two gun cases found beside a creek near the southeast city limits. One case matched Lem Beale’s from 1322 Edith and the other from Chanute Livestock Auction on East 14th Street. Gary Lynn Wikel reported the items at the police department stating he found them by Little Turkey Creek south of the city animal shelter. Weather damaged the gun and cases.
