Beverly Worrell, 17, of Altoona Mid way gears up for a Thursday dance rehearsal ahead of the Safari Jr. Miss Pageant tonight.
Patricia Hearst receives a seven year federal prison term for participating in the 1974 San Francisco bank robbery. Judge Orrick notes the sentence is reduced from the maximum and counts time served. Hearst is eligible for parole in 16 months. The verdict rejects coercion claims and holds Hearst guilty of wounding three bystanders though she did not fire the weapon.
President Ford praised Rhodesia's decision to permit black majority rule within two years as an act of realism. Kissinger mediated with Britain and African leaders while Ford urged global support for an African-led, peaceful settlement and independence.
After the debate, President Ford heads to the Deep South for retail campaigning while Jimmy Carter plans a cross country swing to the West Coast. Ford previously addressed Polish-Americans in Philadelphia and visited an Italian-American market, urging preservation of ethnic neighborhoods. Carter held a Polish-American Congress breakfast and outlined his election effort.
Chanute police pursue leads in an abduction and shooting of Beverly Gordon 38 on a rural Allen County road. A .22 handgun was found at the scene and RBI tests are pending. A second suspect was questioned and cleared. Gordon was listed in good condition at Neosho Memorial Hospital.
The former president plans to name his top foreign policy adviser, Columbia Professor Zbigniew Brzezinski, to a key administration role. The Georgian candidate then toured Houston and Dallas, preparing for appearances in California and Oregon, states where he previously lost in primaries. Ford and running mate Bob Dole campaigned Friday in southern California, a GOP stronghold with 45 electoral votes, while Ford returned to the White House by helicopter to an approving staff crowd.
Lige Matlock, Chanute police chief since 1958, retired on a Friday after a 30 year law enforcement career begun in 1947. He reflected on changes in wages, equipment, traffic duties, and habeas corpus while recommending Chet Hale as his successor.

The Chanute City Commission will meet Monday at 6 p.m. in the Memorial Building to review converting Main Street parking from parallel to angle. Also on the agenda are plaque presentations to retiring employees Lige Matlock and Daryl Dalton, sewer and street work in Ardyn Heights, vacation of N Ash Street to K-39, plans for a Community Recreation Center, amendments to police reserve and industrial revenue bond ordinances for Young's Welding, water to Webbwood Inc, appointment of a city marshall, and North Malcolm and Central Park building rules review.
