Narrow Escape From House Fire Near Central Street

A morning fire at 1901 S Central destroyed nearly all Johnny Shields family possessions. Shields, his wife, and two young sons escaped after the kitchen door failed to open and flames blocked the exit. Only the car, worn clothes, and the boys boots survived. The family is staying with Hazel Shields while seeking affordable rental housing. donations of clothing are requested at 101 S Malcolm. Shields works at Manley Steel and will not be paid for two weeks.

Nixon air diplomacy tour with Hirohito across four states

President Nixon and Mrs Nixon travel to Montana Oregon Washington and Alaska on a four state trip with a Glacier National Park helicopter tour and a Libby Dam inspection. Hirohito and Empress Nagako will stop in Alaska for a brief refueling.

Neosho County 1971 tax bills prepared for Chanute area

Neosho County clerk Wayne Gibson says 1971 real estate and personal property tax bills are being prepared for Chanute with other township bills to follow after statewide assessment adjustments. County valuations rise slightly from 1970, with minor levy changes across districts and a reduced Chanute city levy. An unrelated note mentions Hirohito and Nixon meeting in Alaska, plus a Chanute traffic collision and an open air art fair rescheduled to next Saturday.

Oil and Gas Tax Opposed by Kansas Association

Ray Anderson Jr president of the Eastern Kansas Oil and Gas Association spoke at the annual meeting at the VFW post on Friday night urging opposition to a Senate pending severance tax on natural gas. He warned the tax could raise consumer costs as reserves fall and marginal wells risk early abandonment. The group adopted a resolution demanding officials oppose the legislation.

Lost town of Lahore reshaped by land deals and rail hopes

Historian W. W. Graves records how Lahore in Neosho County nearly became a 12 000 person city with a $12 million renewal, mall project and centennial in 1968 69 instead of Par sons. A 1870 Ladore Journal note described Lahore as a railroad terminus with multiple shops and a depot until landowners resisted sales. Andreas History of Kansas recounts Ladore’s rise and fall, its move to Parsons, and the loss of Lahore infrastructure with the hospital and nurses’ home later razed.

Justice Hugo Black Dies at 85 in Sleep at Bethesda

Retired Supreme Court Justice Hugo L. Black, renowned for literal constitutional interpretation, died in his sleep at Bethesda Naval Hospital at 1 am EDT. He retired Sept. 17 after 34 years on the court, leaving a legacy spanning landmark religion and education opinions. Former Chief Justice Earl Warren lauded him as a great man and intimate friend.
