Wichita Drug Raid Puts 32 in Custody

WICHITA Kansas law enforcement halted late Wednesday night rounding up 32 people on drug charges in the citys second straight narcotics sweep. About 88 officers from the attorney generals office KBI Sedgwick County sheriffs and Wichita police led by Atty Gen Vern Miller served 40 arrest and 19 search warrants.

Chanute landfill to be inspected over open burning

State health officials will inspect Chanute’s sanitary landfill next week after Leon ard Imhof flagged burning issues. The review by Charles Linn of the solid waste section will assess legality under 1970 statutes and department regulations, with city officials seeking guidance on compliance and enforcement.

Rail unions reach tentative pact with Chicago and North Western

The United Transportation Union announced a tentative contract with Chicago and North Western Railway while strikes persisted at Union Pacific and Southern railroads. Federal mediators saw no progress as UTU planned wider walkouts, with Norfolk and Western and Southern Pacific set to strike at 6 am Saturday and six other carriers targeted for July 30.

Former Kansas Governor Alf M Landon told a special legislative committee he opposes any tinkering with the state primary system except possibly adding a presidential primary He was governor 1933 37 and the 1936 Republican nominee for president The interim committee is studying proposals to abandon the primary for party conventions hold a presidential preferential primary and move the Kansas primary up from August to June.

Aid Bill Advances as War Pullout Date Dropped

House Foreign Affairs Committee approved a 3.4 billion foreign aid bill by 30 to 6 and struck all reference to an Indochina war pullout date from a prisoners of war resolution. The measure includes a 1.5 billion increase mainly for Nixon Doctrine military aid and could go to a House vote within two weeks.

Teens Run Home Radio Station Shut by FCC Action

In Metairie Louisiana government agents sealed the studio door of a four month old home made station run by youths led by 15 year old Nathan Gifford. The FCC closed the operation noting a 180 milliwatt signal from a 110 foot directional antenna was easily detectable two blocks away from the bedroom studio.

Boeing Contract for B52 Kits Sealed in Wichita

A $41.7 million Air Force contract awarded to Boeing in Wichita Kansas funds 17 electro optical viewing system kits for B52 bombers. The infrared based devices defend against nuclear attack and work begins immediately for one year, employing about 265 people.

Planners approve city capital improvements package

The City Planning Commission approved a three year capital improvements package to be sent to the City Commission with revisions. City Planner Richard McLanathan noted 45 requests were trimmed to 37 and the cost lowered from 89 million to 2 million with drainage maintenance funding added. Street improvements were removed over dissent from John Orozco who argued streets remain in poor condition.

Neosho Manor Nursing Home Lease Signed in Chanute

Neosho County commissioners signed a $1,500 per month lease with Mr and Mrs Bernard T Myers of Iola and Mr and Mrs James R Lewis of Kansas City. Ray Coder chairman said the one year renewable lease starts Aug 1. Erie resident Bernadine McAlexander terminated her prior lease for health reasons. Neosia Manor is a 30 bed facility built by the county about ten years ago at 302 S Denman Chanute.

Neosho County Red Cross reports seventy eight pints collected during an emergency visit by the Red Cross bloodmobile at Zion Lutheran Church 1200 W Main yesterday. No donor goal was set as a low reserve prompted the drive serving Wichita Blood Center supply to 130 hospitals.

Mobile Homes Rules Proposed

The meeting discussed a 23 page proposed mobile home park ordinance shifting variances to the planning commission, requiring tie downs, underground utilities, two acre minimum parks, and revised space sizes. It sets fire safety rules, street lighting, a five percent recreation area, $50 permit and license fees, and inspection authority for city officials with BOZA appeal rights.
