Kissinger Sees Progress Toward Rhodesia Peace Talks

Secretary of State Kissinger reported considerable progress toward black majority rule in Rhodesia after weekend talks with Rhodesia Prime Minister Ian Smith and South Africa Prime Minister John Vorster. Smith and Vorster voiced optimism that the discussions could yield a near-term settlement and a path to full negotiations.

Governor relies on SRS report to prevent another fatal case

Topeka Kansas Gov Robert Bennett says he will base actions on the Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services secretary report to prevent a similar murder by a Parsons State Hospital patient. University of Chicago researchers report a new chemotherapy approach shows promise for lung cancer. In early stage patients 75 percent survive near a year and in more advanced cases 50 percent respond with an average 12.5 months, compared with prior four to six months.

Governor approves highway safety grants for Neosho Chanute

Governor OKs two highway safety grants for Neosho County Sheriff's Department and Chanute Police Department to fund concentrated traffic safety programs. Sheriff Kern and Chanute Chief Hale named project directors. funds cover salaries, equipment, and uniforms for two to three officer units. Programs administered by Kansas Highway Safety Coordinating Office Topeka to reduce crashes through selective enforcement.
