An around the clock operation at the Ash Grove Lime and Portland Cement Co. pours the walls of six storage silos using a single master form. The project employs about 160 men with concrete walls ten inches thick.
Dell Reed, Chanute High principal, asked Senator Frank Carlson for a flag that had flown over the Capitol. Carlson agreed to provide the 49 star flag, which will arrive soon and be used on the high school stage at a football game and other events.
A Santa Fe Chief passenger train struck a stalled automobile at a rail crossing in Strong City, injuring the female occupant severely. Four others escaped as the car was knocked 60 feet. Kenneth W. Bostrom and two passengers leapt from the left, his wife left from the right.
About 800 people gathered at the National Guard Armory for the Veterans of Foreign Wars merchants' feed held to support the VFW 4th of July celebration. Guests included Rex Kiser, Ora D. Hess, and Floyd Fish. W. J. Althaber noted 600 pounds of fried chicken were served with potato salad cole slaw and bread. Frank Mangan led the meal preparations with volunteers.
Lt. Thomas A. Thatcher a 30 year old pilot from Junction City Kansas and Chief Warrant Officer Marion Sealy Jr. 24 of Gaffney South Carolina were killed when a light plane crashed into a river bank and slid into the water in Korea. The Army cited undetermined cause.
Neosho County reports twelve polio cases this summer with four more from Woodson County treated in Chanute bringing total to fourteen. Most cases were mild and all patients are recovering or improving. A July outbreak prompted a free vaccine clinic where about 750 shots were given to residents up to 19 years old.
Bernard Hansen 16 was injured in an automobile accident Saturday morning and remained in serious condition today at Neosho Memorial Hospital. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Fred Hansen of rural route 1.
In the 24 hours ending at 9 a.m. Topeka reports Kansas traffic fatalities for 1959 reach 411, compared with 378 in the comparable period of 1958.
A cold front moved into Kansas ending a spell of fair weather. The shift brings a light northeasterly wind and drizzle overnight into tomorrow morning with high temperatures near 85 to 91 yesterday and lows around 48 to 58. Forecaster Garrett notes a sharp drop in daytime highs tonight.
Khrushchev urged broad US Soviet accord to avoid ashes and graves as the world faces nuclear danger. He spoke in New York on disarmament and warned that the earth could be buried if peace power is not used. He claimed the USSR will soon surpass the American economy and outlined talks at the UN.
Fall Festival organizers call for more entrants in the queen contest and the opening night home talent show a week away. Local queen hopefuls include Carolyn Sue Thompson Phy lis Carder of Chanute and Pat Porter of Humboldt.
The Kansas Finance Council authorized a 10 percent boost to maximum civil service pay scales for most classified jobs effective Oct. 1, the first major revision in over two years. Manual steps depend on money and agency heads. top-scale workers could see a 5 percent increase now and another 5 percent six months later if funds exist. Additional annual cost is projected at 1.5 to 2 million dollars. Gov. Docking did not indicate final budget requests for further hikes. The council also created new civil service classifications for Forestry and Fish and Game Department employees as required by the 1959 legislature.
Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Crapson mark 65 years since their September 1894 wedding. Pioneers who came to Kansas in covered wagons, they lived near Erie, built a home north of town, raised two children, and remain active with gardening and daily chores.
The Eddie Fulps fund reached 886 dollars by noon with 84 dollars added since yesterday. A Paper cup with small change from the Business Men's Bowling League paid for strikes and splits. Other gifts came from the VFW Auxiliary, George Vin ing, James Trabue, Gertie M. Adams, Fred Skinner, T. F. Ah lers, unidentified friends, and 14 dollars from Disney's Market.
George Wright age 63 of 717 S Steuben suffered serious burns to hands arms and face yesterday on an oil lease near LaHarpe while using gasoline to burn brush. He worked as a roustabout for Joey Drilling Co of Chanute. The gasoline flash caused the blaze and he was treated at Neosho Memorial Hospital and released.
A $2,200 settlement ends a $25,000 judgment suit filed by Robert J. Albo on behalf of his minor son after the death of Dolores Albo in a 1958 traffic crash near Thayer on highway K47 two miles north and three east of Thayer. The case against Mary Lucille Stude baker of rural Thayer was resolved by agreement in district court.
The Inland Daily Press Association will honor five Tribune newsboys at National Newspaperboy Day after a four week contest running Sept. 8 to Oct. 3. Fay Clopine says 43 Tribune carriers were eligible with judging based on subscriptions growth customer service and collections. Awards include a scroll and lapel pin with letters from customers welcomed. The 1958 winners were Gary Wright Gary Carpenter Roy Marks Alan Kepley and Jack Marsh of Chanute.
