Dr. Robert Haines new state director of institutions heard three former employees charges of irregularities at the Chanute tuberculosis hospital. The complaints include pay for time not worked and full benefits on part time status. Nurses Alice Ruggles and Margaret Nevins and nurse technician Martha Johnson testified. Johnson resigned in July, others in September. The hearing was secret at their request and Haines promised action if substantiated.

Two Jets Collide Killing Two Pilots at Dallas Landing
In Dallas Mountain Creek Lake during landing maneuvers at the Naval Air Station two jet fighters collided. Marine Lt. Alexander P. Longdon Jr., 27, of Beaufort South Carolina and Air Force Lt. George A. Tiddlie, 30, of Arlington Texas died. Their bodies were found beside Navy F8U Crusader and Air National Guard F86L Sabre Jet.

Hoover to be released next week from hospital

Rain floods Chanute area as storms burst forth
A deluge dumped 4.45 inches in Chanute with storms ruling Friday night. The downpour flooded streets and ditches, knocked a tree onto a power line near 14th and Santa Fe, started a small garage fire, and interrupted the Mexico Fiesta and opening football game. Police logged a rain related wreck at 8:30 p.m. and a transformer was hit by lightning near 16th and Malcolm.

Car Crashes Factory Injuring 14 Women in Mansfield
A driverless car rammed through a shoe factory wall in Mansfield injuring 14 women, 19 workers were in the plant. Eva Lathrop, 34, of Ova, was the most seriously hurt with a fractured pelvis and was in fair condition in a Springfield hospital.

Use of Oral Polio Vaccine Is Studied
An advisory committee of the Public Health Service met to decide if the Sabin oral polio vaccine should remain in mass immunizations. Dr. Luther L. Terry was to announce the panel’s recommendation, as Canada reported four paralytic polio cases from four million vaccine recipients. Sabin urged continuing use, arguing the vaccine has proved safe and outbreaks arise from those already infected.
