Chanute City Commission approves two annexations

The Chanute City Commission voted 2 to 1 to approve annexation requests from Ranz Motor Co. and Harry Byers and Sons Inc. for property at K 39 west of Plummer Road after hours of discussion over sewer and land use concerns. Mayor Cunningham and Commissioner Orozco supported the move, while Commissioner Chappell opposed citing finances planning and utility service issues.

USD 101 board weighs four site options for new high school

The USD 101 board discussed four potential sites for a new area high school. Architect John Smutz cited utilities and costs, with the north Erie Main site seen as most favorable for lower utility rerouting and minimal land loss. Other sites near Erie Cemetery and along K 108 face railroad and highway hazards and higher extension costs.

Alleged hijackers face murder charges in NY officer death

Five men linked to a skyjack case remain held on $1 million bail on federal air piracy charges and now face murder charges in the death of a New York City bomb squad policeman. Manhattan DA Morgenthau filed the complaint to secure immediate custody if bail is posted.

Mothers petition for tighter rules at Parsons hospital

In Parsons Kansas concerned mothers collected over 1250 signatures demanding stricter controls on mentally retarded patients at Parsons State Hospital. They call for fencing limiting school access and file checks after a 5 year old girl was beaten to death by a patient who wandered off the grounds. Police say Johnny Massey 19 is under evaluation and charged with second degree murder in the child’s death. Massey had prior commitment for incompetence to stand trial in a 2 week old niece killing.

County commissioners discuss ambulance driver requirements

At the Nine County quarterly meeting, officials discussed EMT requirements effective by 1980, local EMT capacity in Neosho County, and state mandate funding. Guffey urged counties to remove intangible taxes with possible 1978 action. a Dec. 9 meeting in Erie will revisit state programs and financing.

City approves Woodmark bond issue and parking study

The City Commission authorized a 325000 industrial revenue bond to Woodmark Inc for building and equipment in Safari Industrial Park with a 2500 annual payment in lieu of taxes for 10 years. A parking plan change on Main Street was deferred for feasibility review. Chief Lige Matlock received an award of merit and plans retirement this month. The panel also set reserve police force limits at 25 and approved a 500 scholarship fund grant to NCCJC Century Club.

Chanute Planning Commission Sets Public Hearing on Housing Element

The Chanute Planning Commission will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Municipal Building for a public hearing on the housing element of Chanute's 1975 1995 Comprehensive Plan. Other business includes Bob Wilson's request for endorsement of industrial park development.
