Fire devastates Johnny Carson office at RCA Building

Fire swept the seventh floor office of television star Johnny Carson in Rockefeller Center destroying furniture scripts clothes and a portrait of Mrs Carson. Carson said everything is gone after finishing taping the Tonight show and leaving the building salvage limited to a pair of cufflinks from his wife.

Alaska oil lease bids hit record windfall for state

Bids totaling about 900 million dollars were submitted for 179 Prudhoe Bay leases on Alaska’s North Slope. Top offer reached 72.2 million for a single 2560 acre tract, involving Getty and Hunt with Amerada Hess and others. Governor Miller warned to use the windfall wisely to fund renewable resources.

An underground nuclear explosion near Grand Valley Colorado registered as a 40 000 ton TNT event with no atmospheric radioactivity reports by the AEC Eight days of weather delays preceded the blast which drew about 60 protesters from Aspen and Cedaredge who feared hydrogen tritium would contaminate gas and food chains.
