India reports Pakistani jets attacked strategic airports near Tibet and a major Assam hub. Paratroopers reportedly landed as fighting rages across West Pakistan and along the frontier. Thant visits plan and Kashmir plebiscite remains Pakistan’s condition.
The Kansas Board of Vocational Education seeks a 1967 fiscal year budget totaling 8,917,966 with a 1.3 million increase in state funds. The plan calls for 2,915,515 state funds and 4.2 million for area vocational technical schools, a 1.6 million rise from the current year. The budget goes to the state budget department for review with hearings on possible cuts before Governor Avery’s recommendation. The Legislature will have final say.
Monarch Cement Co. at Humboldt celebrated a record of safety with three awards at a National Guard armory program. The PCA re award for no lost time accidents in 1964 marked the fourth straight year, while a Bureau of Mines honor went to Cap Lowry for quarry safety and Bob Wulf earned a wristwatch for 38 years without a lost time accident. About 1000 attendees joined the event followed by a dance.
In New Orleans Hurricane Betsy triggered a major disaster as President Johnson toured the damage. A statewide relief effort used boats and helicopters to rescue about 30,000 people with up to 10,000 more in flooded zones. The death toll rose to 34 and losses to cotton, rice and sugar crops were estimated at 30 to 40 million dollars.
The death toll rose to four from fresh torrential rainstorms in Italy hitting northern regions Friday and spreading south today. The storms follow five days of clear weather after previous cloudbursts and floods that killed 40 and left five missing.
Pope Paul VI issued the encyclical Mystery of Faith rejecting new doctrinal opinions by some Roman Catholic theologians on the Eucharist. He called the ideas a grave danger to faith while affirming the right to investigate doctrine and urging restraint of modern language in Mass, preserving the Latin tradition.
A U S Chamber of Commerce official urged caution on proposals to widen the United States Employment Service role. He questioned whether the service should focus on disadvantaged groups or serve all job seekers, and whether employers must list openings and fund operations. The Kansas council also reviewed welfare fund handling and Dickinson County concerns. J R McCune was named Workmen's Compensation Committee chair. H L Snell chaired the Employment Compensation Committee.
After twenty days of strike at American Motors Corp the United Auto Workers reach a settlement. George Gullen AMC vice president announced the agreement as UAW Local 72 prepared to vote. The stoppage idled more than 17 000 workers across Milwaukee and Kenosha and halted 1966 Rambler production.
Billy Ray Kelch, 19, escaped Friday from Douglas County jail by breaking a bar in his cell window. He was held on parole violation after a Douglas County district court grand larceny conviction. His home address is unknown and the escape was discovered at dinnertime.
Typhoon Shirley tore through central and northern Japan on a 24 hour rampage causing 48 deaths with 16 missing and 780 injured. The National Police Agency reports winds 78 to 110 mph, destroying 1,961 houses, damaging 2,590 and flooding 45,512 more.
A surprise strike by switchmen and brakemen of the Santa Fe Railway halted freight and some passenger service across wide areas. The walkout began at midnight and affected trains from Purcell Oklahoma to Chicago, with lines picketed in Kansas City and Amarillo and negotiations ongoing with federal mediation sought.
Police discover two break-ins at local businesses early today. Potter's Hatchery at 14 S. Malcolm shows a broken window and a hinge with three screws removed from the safe. no entry. E-Z Way Cleaners on E Main has a lock pried off a back door to the furnace room, with no access to the main building.
James A. Michener the Pulitzer Prize winning author collapsed with a heart attack Friday in Doylestown Pennsylvania and was hospitalized. His physician Dr Charles Bermeister said he is in satisfactory condition.
U S planes attacked the Viet Cong regiment headquarters in Chuong Thien Province about 150 miles southwest of Saigon. Estimates say 1000 to 2000 guerrillas may be trapped as escape routes were cut off and bombing opened wide jungle areas. By nightfall nearly 100 strikes occurred despite windy, clouded conditions with heavy losses suspected. Earlier helicopters assaulted about 100 guerrillas.
NASA astronauts L. Gordon Cooper Jr. and Charles Conrad Jr. will visit Washington next Tuesday then tour six countries. They will meet at the White House at 11 a.m. and report on their Gemini flight to the National Academy of Sciences and a luncheon with the space board. The itinerary includes Athens, Izmir, Addis Ababa, Madagascar, Nairobi, Lagos, and Lagos to Nigeria home with wives and Cooper’s daughters joining.
