Fiesta of Mexican Independence Began In Chanute
In 1917 four Chanute Mexican Americans led by Reyes Brizuela Julio Verdin Martin Ramirez and Theodore Ramirez organized a meeting to start a Mexican independence fiesta. Brizuela became first president in 1918 and the event continued yearly with the Velasquez Orchestra of Kansas City. The Chamber of Commerce funded the fiesta in 1932 after a two year cancellation.

Prison officials made another unsuccessful attempt to persuade inmates holding about 30 guards and four employees hostage to end their rebellion at Attica New York.
