Mrs. Jean Vaughn of 918 S Lafayette wins top honors in a national publisher contest for her First Grade News project at Alcott. Her write up from April will appear in a sponsor distributed publication for schools and she receives the album Sounds Around Us for use in grades one to three.
An Agricultural Department spokesman said no additional quantities of white wheat this year's supply will be offered for export under the Agricultural Trade Development Act. The Pacific Northwest white wheat will not be offered unless conditions change as markets already exist for most of this class before the 1958 harvest.
Linda Baker, 18, of Springville Utah, slipped on a cliff ledge above Bridal Veil Falls and plunged 800 feet to her death as onlookers watched. Her body was recovered at the base after she and four other hikers climbed the cliff. Lynn Powell, 23, Levan Utah, was struck by Linda as she fell and he regained balance to avoid crashing below.
Sam Amalu, called the Hawaiian prince, departed Denver for Leavenworth to serve a four year federal term. He was convicted last April of using interstate wires to defraud hotels in Denver Colorado Springs and Dallas. Accompanied by deputy U S marshal Oscar A Crist he left by car.

Thirteen people died in highway crashes across Oklahoma over the weekend, the bloodiest 24 hours in state history per the State Highway Patrol. Fifteen were injured, several critically, with accidents blamed on excessive speed and carelessness. Families were among the victims in Rush Springs and Tulsa. one nonresident from Paris, Texas died near Guymon.
In Kansas City two girls Susie Clark aged 12 and Andrea Ellington aged 13 were found unharmed after an overnight search. Three patrol cars and the Jackson County sheriff's mounted posse helped locate them asleep in a patch of high grass near the suburban country club.
State Accident Records Section lists 7 fatalities in the past 48 hours and 356 for the year to date 1957, with 446 for the same period in 1906. The figures track year to date totals and compare prior periods.
Lola Troop 55 won the district camporee at City Park defeating Chanute Troop 25 516 to 422 amid ten events and 65 scouts. Chanute’s Troop 56 placed third. 101 merit badges were earned and a Court of Honor followed with numerous first and second class ranks awarded.
Another cool front moves southeast through Kansas bringing scattered showers and cooler air. Forecasters report winds 20 to 25 mph east of the front with yesterday’s highs 75 to 83 and overnight lows 48 to 57 across Concordia Goodland Garden City.
The United States sent eight Globemasters carrying recoilless rifles jeeps machine guns and ammunition to Amman in Operation Good Hope as part of a 10 million dollar aid program to Jordan aimed at countering Soviet arms flow into Syria. Jordanian officials and dignitaries welcomed the convoy. Cairo papers claimed US plots against Syria and warned of wider regional conflict.
The will of L D Weidensaul filed in Seward County Probate Court leaves about one fourth of his estate to ten Liberal churches and Capper's Crippled Children's Foundation Topeka. Weidensaul died August 29 in Hutchinson as a commercial artist and sign maker with diverse holdings including wheat land in Kansas and Colorado oil and gas leases and Liberal property. The remainder goes to three siblings Zula F Bruchie Liberal Blanche I Groves Hutchinson and Lawrence C Weidensaul Eureka Springs Ark. Two nephews James R Bruchie Inglewood Calif and Bill Bruchie Pueblo Colo receive 160 acres each. Churches named include St Anthony's Roman Catholic Methodist Christian First Church of God South Church of God Baptist Episcopal Presbyterian Church of Christ and Nazarene.
Mills in Oklahoma resume operations today after Millers Union approves company proposal ending the strike. Union members voted yesterday to accept terms and clearing the way for production to restart.
Six Negro youths were blocked from entering North Little Rock High School by whites in a clash that escalated into a tense scene as federal and local authorities watched. The incident followed searing tensions over school integration across Arkansas and the South amid guard presence at Central High and related events.
The Associated Press report tallies seven dead in weekend Kansas crashes, raising the yearly toll to 357. Victims include Jake Wittman 50 of Bazine in Ness County from a Wakeeney crash. Arch Cain 59 near Great Bend. Joe Maeschler Jr. 16 of La Cygne. Mary Jo Wilson 10 of Salina. Jeffery Brumgardt 16 of Victoria High School. L A Walker 45 of Weatherford Texas. and Sam Daniel French 91 in Columbus pedestrians incident.
Paul James a 28 year old race driver from Fairbury Nebraska is in critical condition from burns sustained in a mishap at the Kansas Free Fair. A rear axle failure caused his car to flip end over end and catch fire trapping him beneath. He is an aeronautical engineering student at Wichita University and the accident was witnessed by his wife.
Robert L. Fullerton, 715 W. Beach, replaces the resigned Howard Carder and began duty on the 8 a.m. shift. A veteran, he served 4.5 years in Army military police, moved from Granby, Missouri two years ago, and has worked with his father as a carpenter. Married with two children, he is 26.
The 147th anniversary fiesta of Mexican independence begins at 8 p.m. Friday at Little Mexico with an invocation by Rev. Peter Finnegan. Mayor Harold Williams will crown Maria Esperanza Sanchez of Humboldt fiesta queen. Friday features speeches and tunes by Los Nocturnes Topeka, with dances by multiple performers and a closing dance. Saturday will be all musical with repeated dances and another Nocturnes performance.
Mrs Roberta Clements of 313 South Wilson has been employed as third grade teacher at Murray Hill school. School Supt Buford Fisher confirms the hire noting her previous year teaching at El Dorado and her training at Kansas State Teachers College Pittsburg.
Weather officials warned a very critical pattern as fires burned across California over the weekend. About 700 fires scorched brush and timber, forcing hundreds to flee summer homes in Greenhorn Mountain Sequoia National Forest area and closing part of U S 50 near Placerville in El Dorado County. A firefighter was seriously burned and a Nike base near Mt Gleason faced threats as crews battled more than two thousand fire sites statewide.
C. Ira Hubler age 58 an auto mechanic of 1315 S Santa Fe died this morning at St Johns hospital in Tulsa. The family will arrive in Chanute tonight. Funeral plans are incomplete.
