A free rodeo runs Thursday and Friday at 2 p.m. The Thayer school band performs Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at McLachlen Park with about 10 Chanute musicians. An “Old Timers” honoring event is set for Thursday night, while amateur hour closes Friday at 7:30 p.m. and auctions pork packages by the Lucky Clover 4-H Club at 9:30 p.m. Exhibits feature crops, garden products, sewing and cooking with prizes awarded by judges.

Plane Crash Kills One as C124 Skids at Kirtland
At Kirtland Air Force Base a four engine C124 Globemaster crashed on takeoff in a dust storm. One man died and 68 escaped, with a serious injury and several minor injuries among passengers. Expectant Mother Dies After Derby Highway Crash
A two car collision north of Derby on Kansas Highway 15 left an expectant mother dead at a Wichita hospital and seven others injured. KBI probes slay of Wilma Allen tied to local ties
Kansas Bureau of Investigation agents Roy Dyer and Jim Cline arrived in Chanute to study the period when Wilma Allen, formerly Wilma Cookus and a Chanute Junior College alumna, attended school here.
