Jurors Clear Man in Air Speed Case in Erie County
A 12 man jury in a speed timing case found William B. Mitchell of Wichita not guilty after a brief five minute deliberation. The trial questioned aircraft speed checks and two stop watches used from a patrol plane to clock Mitchell at about 80 mph on highway K47 near Erie. Mitchell, a 42 year old IH district manager, maintained he drove within the limit and presented witnesses including his wife. The case raised issues of air ground visibility, clocking methods, and potential human error in airborne speed enforcement.
