Campers Roll Into Chanute for Kansas Convention

About 1 500 camping units and 5 000 to 6 000 people converge on Santa Fe Park for the Kansas Camper Association fall state convention. Attendees from Arkansas Oklahoma Missouri and various Kansas chapters join activities over three days with elections and committees meeting.

Nine Chanute and area firms join a downtown showcase Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. tied to the state campers convention. Exhibits include campers trailers boats bicycles and motorbikes plus an antique car show. Wrestler Boats and Motors sells and Mobile Manufacturing exports a mobile office on Evergreen to Forest.

School Board Agenda Set for Tuesday Meeting

The District 413 Board of Education will meet Tuesday at 7 30 p.m. in the administration building to decide on wage price freeze effects on USD 413 salaries. Also on the agenda are hiring for a part time teacher and two custodians, enrollment report, lunch costs and free reduced price guidelines, Drug Abuse Committee recommendations, sealed bids for motor vehicle insurance, a 12 passenger van and bus conversion, and the high school athletic budget. A dinner for board and new teachers is noted at the Orchid Buffet, and the meeting was moved from Monday due to Labor Day.

Summer heat patterns and record lows mark local weather

The area experienced a varied summer with highs near 97 degrees on two July days and a peak of 108 on August 8. Rainfall was above average in June and July but fell in August, totaling 23.45 inches January through August with a deficit versus last year. A brief thundershower hit the southeast Chanute area, followed by runoff in drainage ditches.

Director Criticism in Kansas Bottled Drink Inquiry

TOPEKA Kan AP The executive director Rev Richard E Taylor Jr renewed criticism of Dr Morris E Chafetz director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism charging that Chafetz received two 1960s grants from Licensed Beverage Industries Inc and that the organization paid him to reprint material from his book in a pamphlet circulated by the liquor industry.

Rainbow Veterans In Meeting Here

The 42nd Rainbow Division Veterans reunion will be held Saturday at the Tioga Hotel celebrating the association 55th anniversary. A dinner at 6 30 p.m. will start activities with members and guests from Manhattan Lawrence Wichita Pittsburg Kansas City Lincoln Neb and Sapulpa Okla. Membership totaled 52 the past year with 34 members living outside Chanute.

Woman arraigned in Glass Window Destruction Case

Martha Grue, 41, was arraigned in Reno County Magistrate Court on criminal destruction of property for hurling grocery items through market plate glass after credit denial. Preliminary hearing set for Sept. 13. bond $1,000. Separately, Michael J. Rice was arraigned for breaking two cafe windows on Aug. 19. his hearing is Sept. 16 with $1,000 bond.

Labor Day Weekend Traffic Safety Push Aims to Cut Kansas Death Toll

The state launches an 84 hour safety drive starting at 6 p m to reduce highway fatalities versus last year s seven deaths over Labor Day weekend. Kansas logged four deaths on Sunday last year and a year to date total of 448, twenty more than the prior year.
