Bonners Ferry Idaho faces advancing flames within sight of its 2,000 residents as multiple fires burn thousands of acres across Oregon California and British Columbia. more than 200 000 acres may have burned with crews defending towns and evacuating rural areas amid shifting fronts.
The United Auto Workers press toward a Ford contract that could set a pattern for GM and Chrysler as current three year pacts for about 650 000 workers near expiration. Walter Reuther warned a Ford strike could follow if no deal is reached before midnight.
A Buffalo team owned by Henry Childs won the Thayer Homecoming Picnic Fair pulling contest with 11 200 pounds over eight feet. The event capped the second day of the 56th annual celebration in Thayer with other activities including a watermelon feed band concert and an amateur hour to close the three day festival.
Actress Eartha Kitt collapsed Friday night during a pre Broadway run of Peg at Shady Grove Music Fair near Gaithersburg Maryland. A hospital spokesman cited back troubles and described her condition as satisfactory. The production was near Broadway previews in the Washington area.
Verne Arthur Smith, 26, former University of Missouri history lab instructor, was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Harry Hackworth, a freshman from St. Louis, killed in October 1965 after a jury convicted him last April.
