Helen F Craven Erie city treasurer is charged in a 10 count complaint with embezzling 8415.80 from January 1968 to July 1970. The alleged theft involved utility receipts she handled as city clerk and was concealed by false book entries in Erie.
Labor Day closures affect area schools offices and most Chanute stores as Tribune halts publication for the holiday. A May 1972 audit uncovered embezzlements, with Craven facing nine additional felonious counts for unauthorized sums taken from 1971 and 1972. Craven had worked in the city office since January 1967. Project FIND aims to locate 1.5 million elderly Americans eligible for food stamps commodities and other services. Since Aug 2 1.4 million inquiries have been filed with welfare offices in 15 states 2591 added to food assistance. GOP delegate Bill Daley said the amendment shifted from an international peace academy to study of peace through existing institutions and aligns with Nixon's plans for peace. Daley cited Washburn University president John Henderson as inspiration and discussed possible post election shifts in North Vietnamese policy. Daley defended his stance on the war while admitting nonconformity with his hair and youth, and predicted many young voters would back Nixon in November.
