Clarence Cook of 208 S Highland retired Katy agent will travel to Parsons tomorrow afternoon to receive a gold wrist watch for 50 years of continuous service with the Missouri Kansas and Texas Railroad. Cook started as a telegrapher at Moran and rose to agent before his 1928 Chanute tenure, ending with 51 years with Katy. W N Deramus III, Katy president, will present the watch. others in Parsons area will also receive watches.
Chicago officials of 15 non operating railroad unions plan a strike date for about 50 000 workers as talks with Santa Fe Railway fail to reach a union shop agreement. The dispute centers on workers joining unions after a probation period and a ruing about dues used politically.
Last of 16 airmen killed in a four motor KC97 crash on Gray Mountain Arizona is recovered. Walker AFB lists 12 officers among the dead with Capt Harold D Shumard as commander. Rescue teams found eight bodies Tuesday and completed retrieval by Wednesday, transporting remains to Luke AFB near Phoenix.
Police Chief Tom Morehead says officers and a city park worker will guard parks Roy Ster Stadium and nearby areas to deter vandalism during Halloween. ERIE James W Buckley of Chanute pleaded guilty in district court to second degree forgery for passing a $50 forged check at a Chanute market. He was sentenced to not more than 10 years at Lansing and filed for parole after sentencing. The hearing on his request for medical treatment was overruled. Buckley is a Rhode Island native who came to Chanute from Arkansas and previously worked for Whitehead Kennels.

Southwestern Bell Tele phone Co will buy a 50 by 125 foot lot at 10th and Bridge in Humboldt for a new dial system office as part of its plan to install dial phones there. Construction date and changeover timing are not set. about 1200 subscribers will be affected once implemented. Dial systems currently operate in Erie and St. Paul, with changeover there effective June 2, 1955.
The county reports a easing flu epidemic with total absences 545 today down from 564 yesterday. Dr. J. D. Gough says the six week cycle continues and sickness is less severe with fewer cases though some schools still show higher absences. Royster Junior High 152 today from 203 yesterday. Alcott 41. About 65 girls from the Senior and Junior high schools will attend a Saturday Play Day at Pittsburg State Teachers College in Pittsburg. Team games and swimming are scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The event is an annual presentation by the college physical education department. Helen Anderson and Katherine Wintle will accompany the students.
Cleveland report cites Dr Morris Rockstein of New York University noting studies in animals and humans indicating a potential maximum lifespan. He says longevity remains near the limit for most people and that life expectancy after age 65 has shown little change despite medical advances.
Local bank statements show total deposits near 14 million dollars with assets at 15,093,549.09 as of Oct 11. Deposits dipped below October 1956 in July at about 13.07 million, while year ago deposits stood at 13.26 million, signaling improved community business conditions.
Chanute farmer and businessman Dean Kepley was arrested on a Montgomery County warrant for issuing an insufficient fund check. The check for 1590 dollars, tied to a car mortgage, has been paid, with abatement decided by the court. Kepley is jailed in Independence with a 3000 dollar bond set and not yet posted.
A two car crash Sunday resulted in the death of Grant R. McManus 19 of Coffeyville. The injuries he sustained in the collision led to his death last night.

Otto Schimann an 88 year old Army veteran who died on September 28 left 74108 to the Little Sisters of the Poor home in Washington. Attorney J Bruce Kellison filed the will for probate noting Schimann immigrated from Switzerland and served in the Army 1887 to 1910 and in World War I. The estate consisted of savings and savings bonds.
