Chanute has been designated an Official National Bicentennial Community by federal and state administrations. The Chanute Bicentennial Committee led by Kay Rommel and John Willcott announced receipt of certification from ARBC officials. The city will host a flag ceremony and parade with a citywide luncheon, while promoting official bicentennial merchandise and commemorative events.

Kansas Education Budget Seeks 5 Percent Aid Increase
Kansas Department of Education finance experts warn that a budget cut would force the Legislature to provide more funding or raise property taxes to support a five percent rise in local school aid. State Budget Director James Bibb urges 248.7 million dollars for state aid, about 3 million more than current.
