A U S Navy A3D jet bomber crashed during a parachuting demonstration at El Centro Naval Air Facility killing nine men including three crew members. Thirty five people were injured six critically as the 70 000 pound aircraft broke apart after hitting a power line. Wreckage lit fires across buildings and cars.
Garnett City Manager Howard M Rubin frames a vandalism wave as a test of strength against a hard core of about two dozen habitual offenders among Garnett High School students. Eight teens were arrested, curfews tightened, and police leave canceled until after Halloween as officials contend with forged parental notes and rising vandalism across town.
Two proposed amendments to the state constitution will appear on ballots. One would permit a sheriff to serve more than two consecutive terms subject to election. The other would eliminate personal property tax on household goods not used for income production. Both appear as ballot questions with yes or no options.
A year-old prisoner Walter Sturgeon Jr. of Great Bend slashed his left wrist in his cell at the city jail. Assistant Chief L R Spencer said Sturgeon had three deep cuts and was treated at Neosho Memorial Hospital before being moved to the county jail in Erie. He faces intoxication, disturbing the peace, and assaulting an officer charges and an extradition warrant for a Borger Texas parole violation. Texas authorities will return him to Borger.
AP reports Kansas traffic death log shows 67 fatalities for October through 9 am Wednesday, totaling 544 for 1964, compared with 483 in the comparable 1963 period.
A mysterious intercepted letter discusses a hen laying as many as 7,000 eggs daily and features a playful remark about ongoing cackling. The sender signs as Nute and hints at broader intrigue surrounding poultry and secrecy.
Washington AP United States and the Soviet Union began exchanging weather information today via a teletype circuit. A Weather Bureau spokesman said scheduling will be settled next week while President Johnson called the agreement a substantial step forward in cooperation and tied it to a 1961 Kennedy offer to share meteorological data. Information from satellites will not be sent to the Soviets, and it is unclear if the Soviet Union has satellites capable of gathering weather data.
Area forecast calls for fair to partly cloudy skies through Thursday with little temperature change. Fog will reform Thursday morning with lows 45 to 50 and highs around 70. Kansas sees eight to 10 degree above normal temperatures in coming days despite today’s slight cooling and light showers overnight. City by city highs and lows ranged from 63 at Olathe to 73 at Goodland and Pittsburg, with Lawrence lows 32 to 58. Light showers were reported at night and foggy conditions in southern Kansas disrupted Wichita airport activity.
Honolulu AP report says Chief Petty Officer Daniel Earl Anderson 33 died after his truck and a jet trainer plane collided on the Barber Point Naval Air Station runway. Anderson, of Neodesha Kansas, was survived by his widow and three children. two Air Force officers in the jet were unhurt.
In Yates Center Claude Hesler camelid? no, Hesler, owner of 14,000 Kimber chickens, reports 7,000 eggs daily. His large 8,500-chicken house uses automatic feeding and watering, with cages and sections to sort hens. Eggs are washed, candled, graded, cased, then shipped by Hesler to Erie. Hesler toured Kansas, Arkansas, Missouri ranches with up to 80,000 birds and touts his latest equipment as superior.
Gerald Lyons, a hog farmer on an 80 acre farm in north central Illinois, struck oil while drilling for water. Two shallow wells at 117 and 147 feet yielded oil mixed with water. A University of Illinois geologist called the find high grade for its depth. Lyons plans to talk with oil promoters after fall plowing. He remains focused on water for his pigs.
TOPEKA AP Consolidated net income for the Santa Fe Railway System in the third quarter of 1964 was 22,330,464, up from 16,900,153 a year earlier. For the first nine months, 1964 earnings reached 63,526,931 versus 50,698,903 last year, with a third quarter gross of 167.4 million, up from 159.9 million. earnings per share were 2.49.
In Seattle Charlie White, 108, and Frank Bogue, 105, discuss drinking as a health habit. Bogue, raised by Chippewa in Michigan, recalls railroading and naval shipyard work in Bremerton. They share convalescent center rooms while planning a bar outing for Bogue’s upcoming birthday. In England, 84-year-old Jack East receives a barrel of beer from landlord Frank Tohill, noting decades of drink at the Pigeon Inn and a $39,200 beer-spending figure.
Chanute area students from kindergarten to junior college stage a four day Halloween program beginning today. Activities include art displays sponsored by the Women's Division of the Chamber of Commerce UNICEF drive Friday night and weekend dances and a parade. A strict honor card system aims to curb vandalism with gates to dances and events guarded by school officials and local groups.
Washington AP reports former President Dwight D. Eisenhower is back in good voice and recovering well from a moderate respiratory irritation. The 74 year old five star general was taken ill with a cough and throat irritation last Thursday and spent a comfortable night at Walter Reed General Hospital.
The unarmed U.S. Air Force C123 transport was shot down near the Viet Nam Cambodia frontier with eight Americans killed and seven bodies recovered. Overflight blamed on border identification and bad weather during a supply mission. A U.S. soldier killed in a guerrilla ambush near the frontier raises toll to 214.
