Royster illness outbreak hits schools with 37 percent absence at Royster Junior High and 12 percent at Senior High Alcott and Hutton while others report little disruption. Hunters report strong prairie chicken activity near LeRoy Admire and Yates Center despite lower numbers than past years.
In Elizabeth New Jersey three unidentified youths doused 14 year old James Kulpa with kerosene and set him ablaze as he walked through an open lot. He suffered second degree burns to thighs and legs and is in fair condition at Alexian Brothers Hospital. His 11 year old brother Joey helped by removing his own coat to cover the flames. Police have not yet located the assailants.
In Clarksville Tennessee a five year old boy, Robert Ray Mansel, shot his 19 month old sister Audrey Anita Mansel while she slept. The weapon, a shotgun left in the bedroom by the father, was fired unintentionally. No charges were filed as the coroner described the incident as the child not understanding the danger. Another child, Deborah Lynn, age 3, slept in the same room. The parents were away from the home at the time.
A Sunday morning blaze killed Dukie Cogdill and trapped his 14 year old half brother Ralph Caverty in a 60year old farm home seven miles east of Bethany Missouri. Five others escaped including James Caverty Jr and twins Lora Mae and Dory Fae Caverty. The fire began in the fireplace chimney.
Gen Maxwell D. Taylor told the Assn of US Army that a countermissile defense for ballistic missiles has begun in the Nike Zeus project. He argued the antimissile system is affordable, essential to deter nuclear war, and within reach costwise, though he did not set a price.

Store manager Troy Borum will complete inventory.
People of all faiths at the First Methodist Church contributed over 12000 dollars to the stricken Davis family of Nat Davis Jr whose three children Peggy 4 Stevie 6 and Jodie 8 perished in a Saturday night fire. Deanna 11 escaped and Nat Davis a head cashier at the First National Bank of Huntsville was not at home.

Dr. F A Moorhead says preschoolers should come 8 to 9 a.m. and immunizations are open to ages six months to 40 years. A booster is advised if the last dose was 7 to 10 months ago.
The Soviet Union proposed replacing the present Disarmament Commission with an 82 nation body that would remain in permanent session. It would abolish the 12 nation Disarmament Commission and the five nation subcommittee and open the debate to the public except where private talks are agreed upon.
Chicago cabbie Jack Wall says a shipping magnate privately funded his and his wife’s vacation trip from England to Hamburg and on to the United States. Wall aged 53, earns about 20 dollars weekly and will not reveal the benefactor’s identity. They sailed in August and have a return reservation for November 12.

Claude Johnson Dalhart Tex is named vice president at large and Lloyd Voltz Greensburg is listed as a new state vice president. Dalhart Tucumcari and Camdenton bid for 1958 convention while Gus Crump Liberal is elected president of the Kansas Highway 54 Assn.

Troy Norvell Bentley 19 was killed and his brother Willard Lee 27 was seriously injured in a collision between their car and a freight train at a crossing near Pleasan ton. The brothers, residents of Wichita, were sons of Mrs. Lulu Bentley of Fort Scott.
Mrs. E. I. Hughes of near Hoyt, a teacher in Circleville schools, was killed in a one car crash west of Rock Creek, Kas., last night according to the Jefferson County sheriff's office.

Gene Beckley aged 19 a Plainville High School graduate was killed near Hoilington Kas when he was crushed between a truck and a tank. The accident occurred today and the victim is identified by the local coroner and authorities.
Willard Arthur Brown, 23, who fled from Montana prison and kidnapped and assaulted victims, surrendered to police after his mother in New York urged him to give up. He had held seven people, including a mother of three and two Canadians, at gunpoint before the arrest near Lava Hot Springs, Idaho.
