Kansas City reports steady to mixed livestock bids with cattle mostly steady to easy, hogs down slightly, and lambs steady. Cattle top steer prices 23.00–24.25, heifers 23.00–24.00, cows 15.00–16.00. hogs 1–3 210–250 lb 16.25–16.75. sows 14.75–15.75 for 300–400 lb. Sheep lambs 15.90–16.00. Eggs and produce quoted with butter near 70 cents per pound. grain and beans quoted by region.
Coadjutor Bishop Leo C. Byrne of Wichita administered the Sacrament of Confirmation to about 200 parishioners at St. Patrick's including 30 converts after the 9 a.m. Mass. He arrived Wednesday for the visit and departed yesterday afternoon for St. John's parish in Lola. He was accompanied by his secretary Rev. Edward Steinberger and several visiting priests.
St. Mary's at Parsons and Rev. William Ryan of South Mound and Erie report no school at St Patrick's for the primary grades yesterday and today as primary teachers attend the Diocesan teachers meeting in Wichita.
Neosho County Mental Health Association met at the Christian church in Erie with Robert Geiger presiding. St. Paul Erie and Chanute were represented. Two films were shown and Geiger announced Humboldt clinic organization to start after year’s start. Geiger will attend a National Mental Health Association session in Kansas City this weekend.
Four Kansas lawyers filed a brief with the U S Supreme Court in the Tennessee apportionment case but the court denied the motion to file the brief without comment. The Kansas brief, read in part during arguments, urged favorable action on equal legislative representation. Submitting attorneys were J P Harris Peter Macdonald Joan McCormany and Ernest W Johnson.
Ed Childs 81 of Buffalo died unexpectedly yesterday afternoon. A retired farmer born June 17 1880 near Paola he married Sally White in Nelsonville Missouri 1909. Survivors include his wife two daughters three sisters a brother and three grandchildren with Irene predeceased him. Funeral Saturday 2 pm Christian church Buffalo burial Buffalo cemetery Campbell Funeral Home Yates Center in charge. Mrs Dallas Cramer and Scott return to Topeka after a week with Mrs Cramer’s parents the Stracks in R3. Harry Jacob Amphenour, 98, longtime Pleasanton resident and former farmer, died today in a Fort Scott hospital. He moved to Pleasanton in 1880 from Illinois in a covered wagon. Among his survivors is great grandson Tom Van Sickle, a state senator for Anderson, Linn, and Bourbon Counties.
Galesburg residents are invited to a Monday 7:30 p m meeting where Howard Woodworth president of the Smaller High Schools Association discusses School Unification. Woodworth has attended Topeka legislative meetings and other state gatherings.
Two Georgetown University surgeons report success with an artificial valve for defective aortic valves. Dr. Charles A. Hufnagel and Dr. Peter W. Conrad describe using a Dacron and silicone rubber valve in the Journal of the American Medical Association and note multiple prior replacements.
Former President Eisenhower tells Barnard College luncheon that educated women are essential to sustaining a free government. He argues education for both sexes clarifies international problems and stresses the vital role of motherhood in child development, praising his wife Mamie Doud.
Dr William Jennings Bryan Henrie of Grove Oklahoma was released on 3000 bond after arraignment in justice court on an abortion charge. A preliminary hearing was set for October 30 by Justice of the Peace William Nowlin. Henrie, 56, was arrested by Oklahoma Bureau of Investigation agents over an operation on a Oklahoma City woman treated in Miami Ohio. The case is his fifth such charge in a year with trials pending from three earlier counts and a fourth dismissed for lack of prosecution.
Milford Kansas receives a 3150 interest free government loan to plan relocation facilities as the Corps of Engineers dam floods the town. Funds allocated for sewerage 1130 plan cost 213150, water 139380, streets 202800. Construction start expected in October 1962.

Elections occurred in two localities with Clay Center approving city employee retirement plan in a Aug. 30 vote and Arkansas City rejecting it 3 to 1 on Tuesday. League says resolutions allow counties and cities to join the program. petitions can force elections, and Harvey County has one filed. As of Oct. 6, 40 counties and 53 cities had adopted resolutions to join the retirement plan.
Dallas Texas AP reports House Speaker Sam Rayburn, 79, ill with incurable cancer, has spent his 19th day at Baylor Hospital with no change in condition. A hospital bulletin notes he had a small lunch and sat up, but his status remains serious.
Wall Street opened higher but gains faded to a mixed close as moderate late trading left most key stocks fluctuating. Volume was about 3.5 million shares versus 3.85 million the previous day, with blue chips driving early gains before later losses reduced the overall list. Corporate activity on the exchange picked up while over the counter interest lagged.
The Defense Department announced an eased call to active duty for Army Medical Dental and Veterinary Corps officer Reservists. Some officers already called will be eligible for release while overall medical needs will be met mainly by nonprior service draftees.
