A 7 year old Phoenix girl with severe malnutrition was found to have spent two years locked in a small bedroom. She weighed 28 pounds while doctors say she should be about 55. Her mother Ruth Shelton 31 was charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor and admitted keeping the child confined. Authorities warned of possible further charges.

Jury Trials Set in Erie Court for November Opening
Erie district court opened its October term with three cases slated for jury trial starting Nov. 9. State v John Hamilton involves second degree burglary and larceny from the Neosho Valley Creamery theft of about 3000 pounds of pecans in January 1958. Rex Hamilton was convicted in the break-in. Byers had unrelated grand larceny charges. The two civil actions are Roy Grant Babcock vs Bertha May Kennedy and Robert Kusel vs E E Ott.

Castleberry Waives Preliminary Hearing in Hereford Heifer Theft
Jerry Castleberry, 46, Irving Texas, waived preliminary hearing in Erie justice court and was bound over to district court on grand larceny charges. Unable to post a $10,000 bond, he was remanded to county jail. He is accused of stealing seven Hereford heifers from Dell Gibbs of rural Thayer at Chanute Sales Pavilion on August 12. He was arrested September 29 in Springfield Missouri and handed back to Neosho County. Sheriff Jerry Sloan said Castleberry admitted the theft.

Brush Fire Threatens Altadena Homes Near Los Angeles
A 3,200 acre brush fire in Angeles National Forest burned along a four mile northeast front near Altadena and Angeles Crest Highway. Three families were evacuated, but firefighters contained spread with 1,500 men and 18 tanker planes using retardant. The blaze was out of control for a second day though threat to structures was mainly potential.

Sheriff M B Cunningham reports thieves forced entry by snapping a front door lock then pried open inner vaults and safes at the Altoona bank exchange. About $200 in silver from the exchange was taken and 30 safety deposit boxes were ransacked. Bill Hansen elevator also entered with no missing items found. Bob Wilson of Fredonia discovered the break between 7:30 and 8 a.m. burglary likely occurred around midnight.
