A Katy freight train derailed four miles north of Moran Kansas with sixty one of 119 cars leaving the tracks. Seven tank cars of LPG exploded and burned amid wreckage, with three blasts shattering cars and hurling debris. Ten acres burned as crews from Parsons and a railroad explosives expert work to secure the scene.

Tropical Storm Isbell intensified toward hurricane strength as it neared western Cuba. Forecasters predicted a crossing of the western tip into the Gulf of Mexico and a later eastward track toward Florida, with warnings issued from Pinar del Rio to Havana amid crop damage concerns.
The October term of Neosho county district court opened here today and will open tomorrow at Erie. Opening days are devoted principally to reading of the dockets and setting of trial dates.
