City officials reviewed a new ordinance to compel repair or removal of unsafe buildings. County tax rolls may bill owners for city removals if repairs fail. Other action included denying a retail beer license, delaying the milk ordinance form, and plans for street lighting, paving, and industrial site leases.
Floyd E. Prince of Macon Georgia surprised his daughter Mrs. Wendell Bowyer in Chanute with a family reunion. He called Sunday night from Tulsa and plans to visit Fort Leavenworth Peru Indiana and California to see five children and buried parents.
TOPEKA AP reports a weak cold front will cross Kansas today and another arrive in the northwest last Wednesday, but the Weather Bureau says temperatures and skies will little change. Highs reach 75 in the northwest to the low 80s in the southeast with lows 45 to 55, as mostly fair conditions persist through Wednesday.
The fifth World Series game was postponed due to rain after a 71 minute delay. It will be played Wednesday at Yankee Stadium with Giants pitcher Jack Sanford facing Ralph Terry. The schedule shifts include an off day for travel, moving games to Friday and Saturday in San Francisco if needed.
Winnie Ruth Judd known as the Tiger Woman escaped Monday night from Arizona State Hospital in Phoenix. Despite a 1931 murder conviction, superintendent Samuel Wick said he did not consider her dangerous. Judd is now 57.
The Justice Department filed a civil antitrust suit in Los Angeles against Cities Service Sinclair and Richfield accusing them of market allocation across six western states and a no compete agreement with Richfield nationwide. Subsidiaries Empire Gas and Fuel and Sinclair Delaware Corp. are named defendants with several board officials also implicated.
Fidel Castro and James B. Donovan near agreement to release 1,113 Bay of Pigs prisoners with a Miami flight likely in a few days. Castro originally sought 62 million dollars in cash though Donovan hinted at food and medicine instead. Some 60 prisoners already freed and U.S. help with surplus food may be arranged.
Staff Sgt. Wallace G. Mills 38, of Lubec Maine, was found shot to death Monday night in a bachelor for non commissioned officers barracks at Ft. Riley. Authorities investigated the line of duty status and details remained sparse.
The Chanute board approved three policy changes including the diploma policy tied to Armed Services GED tests, changes to the teacher salary schedule removing extra graduate hours, and a housing policy for foreign students studying at the junior college. Other actions include bond plans for a future site, land use, and halting classroom charity collections, plus conferencing time and per pupil cost rise.

A two ton farm truck backed over 19 month old Gary Wayne Vosburg, killing him in Hutchinson Kansas. The child’s mother Mary A Vosburg and his maternal grandparents Earl and Mrs Dueck were nearby. Richard Allen Dueck the uncle said he did not know of the accident until the scream.
