U S paratroopers of the 101st Airborne combed rice fields north of Qui Nhon and killed 17 Viet Cong. The 1st Cavalry Division also reported action nearby, killing one Viet Cong and detaining two suspects about 10 miles west of the town.
In Snohomish Washington in a Wednesday fire, wind swept through fallen limbs and wires as flames destroyed the Levick home where George Levick 95 and his wife aged 90 lived for decades. The couple, childless, survived with help from neighbors and said they would manage without aid. Levick had retired from farming long ago.
ParsonS Kansas AP The 1965 southeast Kansas pecan crop will be smaller than last year with forecasts at one third to one half of the 1964 output. Jack Kinzer of the KSU experiment field near Chetopa says the off year follows a two year cycle of strong crops, with harvest starting around November 1 after the first hard frost.

Parson s Kansas AP report says R C Blackburn 66 and his son Darold D Blackburn 38 died when their pickup collided with a Labette County gravel truck at a county road intersection nine miles southwest of Parsons. Darold's two sons Darren 5 and Dwight 4 were seriously injured. Everett Furnas 39 of Chetopa, driver of the county truck, had a leg injury.
Chanute hosts the 22nd annual Fall Festival with a three deck program starting at 6 30 p m on Main between Lincoln and Highland featuring local musicians. A Festival Fever Sale runs 8 to 10 p m with the Starlighters at 9 30 p m. An open street dance follows into the morning.

Twenty pressing department employees of Cherryvale Manufacturing were fired after a wildcat strike. Twelve strikers picketed the plant as new piece rate standards reduced earnings for two workers. Firm president M. L. Phillips said no negotiations and that the rest of the plant continues operating while he hires new pressing department workers.
Bill Ray Kelch, 19, was remanded to Hudson County jail in Newark to await his return to Kansas. The FBI arrested him in North Plainfield as a fugitive from a Kansas jail break, saying he helped escape from the Douglas County jail in Lawrence. He was arraigned and held on $1,500 bail.
