The Heart of Atlanta Motel challenged the public accommodations section of the Civil Rights Act before the Supreme Court at the start of the court term.
A 1961 Chevrolet driven by Steve Allen, 16, collided with a 1956 Ford driven by Linda Rana, 16, at Main and Western causing about $1,000 in damage. A second crash at Lincoln and Elm involved Charles Arnett and Kelly Wendeln with minor damage. Multiple other incidents were reported, along with a federal court debate over Congress power to enforce the Civil Rights Act, featuring Moreton Rolleston Jr and Archibald Cox before the Supreme Court.
TOPEKA AP temperatures rose across Kansas with fair skies ahead. Tonight’s low 35 to 40, Tuesday’s high 70 to 75. A chilly autumn burst produced a record low of 31 in Topeka, two degrees below the 1952 daily low, with Hill City at 28 and Pittsburg at 41 others.
In Richmond Missouri two victims were located in the downtown three story Richmond Hotel ruins. Lawson W Henderson an 81 year old retired teacher was found in a collapsed section. Jay Wall a 61 year old clothing store employee was found near a third floor entry doorway. Lexington firefighter George Graham collapsed during effort and is hospitalized in serious condition, suspected heart attack.
Echlin Manufacturing Co. announces the purchase of Chimont Machine Products Co. at Montague Michigan and Otto-Ktems Inc of St. Louis Missouri, both auto parts firms. Earlier this year Echlin acquired the automotive division of Electra Manufacturing Co. at Independence Kansas.
Topeka AP reports Kansas traffic death log covering the 48 hours to 9 a.m. Monday. The October 8 figure is 1964, with a comparable 1963 period at 441 deaths, indicating year over year change.
Local weather note says Jack Frost will work overnight, touching windows and surfaces with frost. Residents should prepare for cold air and decorative icy patterns forming by morning.
The city commission continues a public hearing on the proposed widening of Main tonight at 7 30 in the district court room on the Memorial building third floor.
Detroit AP reports General Motors and the United Auto Workers reached a tentative three year national labor contract likely ending the 11 day nationwide strike. Local plant issues in 117 of 130 plants must be resolved before the national agreement takes effect, with wage and fringe gains plus earlier retirement incentives, vacations, and holidays.
United Fund collections reached 7714 today as the door to door residential campaign began. The total equals 35.2 percent of the 21906.19 goal with 475 contributions recorded across divisions led by Jerry Morris in Business and Professional. Jim Cooper chairs Payroll and Employee, 31.3 percent. Mrs. George Eaton heads Clubs and Organizations, 52.3 percent. and Schools are at 100.4 percent. The residential goal is 4736.19, 21.6 percent of the total drive, and the residential drive is expected to finish this week.
Sparkling fall drew thousands to Humboldt for the seventh annual Bible parade. A Jesus return float by Poplar Grove Baptist won grand prize. Jonah and Whale by Humboldt Assembly of God took traveling trophy for third consecutive year. About 12 000 spectators saw 27 biblical floats. First Baptist beauty float I Am the Bread of Life won first prize for beauty. Jesus Bearing His Cross won dramatization. Thorn Crowned King by Walther League won authenticity. Ernie Mehl of the Kansas City Star spoke on The Land of Beginning Again. Free bean feed and a religious concert followed in the square.
