West Springfield Mass AP report says 10 year old Steven Eicker pulled the emergency brake saving 35 youngsters aged 6 to 11 aboard a King’s Highway Elementary School bus as driver Isaac Martin slumped at the wheel. Martin died before reaching Providence Hospital Holyoke.
Harold M Bailey reports three forged checks cashed at local food stores by a woman over past few days. Each for twenty five dollars. Police say three similar forgeries in the name of a rural Cha nute woman were turned over earlier, yet link unclear.
Bobby Erickson, 13, received a junior membership card from the Chanute Humane Society after rescuing a dog in danger during a Neosho River trip. He described wanting to become a veterinarian and was praised for his compassion and service to animals.

Pittsburg officials recovered a bundle of court letters minutes before sealing a Centennial tune capsule. The letters contained copies of the District Court motion calendar and were mistakenly placed in the capsule by the clerk Mrs. Josephine Cattaneo, who retrieved them prior to sealing.
A federal court in Tulsa ruled Continental Casualty Co. need not pay $25,000 for the Wichita bombing death of Forrest Don McCuiston of Tulsa. McCuiston was killed by a bomb at Wichita Airport in 1958. police called it suicide, but his widow claimed the policy should pay.
The State Highway Commission approved more than 400000 dollars of highway construction in Woodson and Neosho counties as part of contracts totaling 991590 dollars across 11 Kansas counties. Low bidder Freeport Construction Co. of Pittsburg won the main project and another Erie contract. Nelson Brothers and Springer Construction won additional seed and surfacing contracts in Anderson and Montgomery counties respectively.
Civil Air Patrol units refueled and moved from Wichita to a new search area for a missing red Cessna 180.
