Homer E. Robins, 79, of Agricola, Kansas, died in an Ottawa hospital from injuries suffered in a two car collision on U.S. 50 near Waverly on September 24. The accident occurred about 2 1/2 miles east of Waverly.
Police report a nonlocal roofer soliciting elderly homeowners for roof inspections. He claims minor fixes are needed for a few dollars then finds additional repairs and issues a large bill. One woman paid $196 after about an hour.
The Agriculture Department estimated Americans will smoke about 5 percent more cigarettes in 1965, averaging 216 packs per smoker and totaling 536 billion cigarettes nationwide. The rise reflects a larger smoking-age population and resumed use after declines. A further increase is projected for 1966.
Fair and warmer through Saturday with highs in the mid 70s and lows near 50. Clear skies bring several days of warming in Kansas after a month wetter than normal. Frost scattered in western Kansas with 35 at Goodland and Russell to 44 at Pittsburg. Thursday highs ranged from 57 at Goodland to 68 at Pittsburg.

Sen John Stennis says he has not seen McNamara's 145000 man force plan and cannot comment. The plan relies heavily on National Guardsmen with 130000 in 831 units and 15000 Reserve members in 160 units. Core units include three divisions and six brigades all within the National Guard. The Pentagon lists inactivated Reserve units including 12th Special Forces Group Kansas City and 154 Signal Company Construction Herington among 220 total.

TOPEKA Kansas. There was no recommendation on rerouting U S 54 west from Wichita at the state highway commission meeting. Commissioner Robert Langenwalter had said a decision would come Thursday but state highway director Addison Meschke said no determination is expected before the Oct 13 commission meeting if then.
Leaders from 19 states and 200 educators create the Educational Commission of the States to study issues across borders. The plan seeks better responses to dropout, language, and funding problems without granting regulatory power.
A Kansas group will draft recommendations to the Kansas Legislature on the Interstate Compact on Education. Gov. Avery will appoint the report committee with Adel F. Throckmorton as chairman. Obadiah Junior Ware 27 a Mansfield construction worker survived a 13 foot ditch collapse after two hours trapped. Workmen freed him and he was taken to a hospital with possible shoulder and ankle fractures. A similar cave-in on July 23 left him buried chest high.
