Firepower of U. S. Halts Red Assault Near Bu Dop

U S paratroopers and artillery repelled a Viet Cong and North Vietnamese assault near Bu Dop six miles northeast of Dak To. U S forces reported 7 Americans killed and 13 wounded while claiming heavy enemy losses from a six hour sweep. Monsoon rains limited air strikes over North Vietnam to the south of Hanoi.

Parents organize steering group on inquiry results

A Chanute Recreation Commission meeting organized a Parent Inquiry Steering Group to discuss and distribute results of the recent parent survey. Twenty six volunteers will meet Dec 13 at 4 p.m. in the Central Park Community Building as 508 questionnaires yielded a 36 percent response.

McCarthy to Challenge Johnson in Four Democratic Primaries

Sen. Eugene J. McCarthy announced he will challenge President Johnson on Vietnam in four Democratic primaries and possibly two more. He cited a growing moral crisis and said he will enter Wisconsin Oregon California and Nebraska contests, with decisions on Massachusetts and New Hampshire expected within two weeks.

Fredonia Youth Released on Bond

Fredonia native Steve Hollis a 19 year old KU student was arraigned on three counts of forging a prescription and one count of passing a worthless check He allegedly obtained Desoxyn at two Baxter Springs drug stores He posted bond on the check charge 500 and 3500 on forgery and was released His trial is set for December 12 in Columbus Cherokee County attorney Paul Armstrong described Desoxyn as a pep pill

Fehr Named Manager of KCRB Radio Station

Jim Fehr is named manager of KCRB radio station by owner Jim Roberts of Farmington Missouri. He replaces Jim Morris who has resigned. The change takes effect tomorrow. Fehr was chief engineer and has been with KCRB since 1958. Morris plans were not announced.

Willing Breakfast Tour Heads to Fredonia

Chanute Area Chamber of Commerce continues its goodwill breakfast series with a trip to Fredonia on Tuesday. The local delegation will assemble at the Memorial building front and depart at 6:15 a.m. The event is organized by the chamber public relations committee.

Car Damaged In Galesburg Crash Involving 17 Year Old Driver

Linda Andrews a 17 year old of Galesburg received $800 damage in a one car accident a mile east and three fourths mile south of Galesburg last night about 7 o clock. She was not injured. The car a 1963 Olds skidded on a slick spot went into the east ditch came out and overturned into the west ditch, sheriff said.

Collision in Erie leaves minor damage in two-vehicle crash

A 1968 Chevrolet driven by Harold Rowland of Erie sustained about 75 dollars in damage after a minor collision at 2nd and Main around 9 45 a.m. Today's sheriff's office report notes the 1967 Oldsmobile backing from a parking stall by Charles Forsyth of Erie sustained no damage.

Mills rules out tax hike this year amid budget cut talk

Neosho county vehicle owners will receive 1968 license tag application forms December 12. Macedonia Quake Fatal To 8 Persons

An earthquake along the Yugoslav Albanian border leveled Debar in western Yugoslav Macedonia. At least eight people were killed and about 40 injured as nearly every house was destroyed or badly damaged. Belgrade radio warned the death toll could rise with many missing. Three thousand residents fled to streets and parks as rain added misery.

Dog Saves Couple But Loses Life

In Welda Kansas Mr and Mrs Ralph Griffith woke to a fire at their farm home two miles north of Welda. Their poodle Skippy alerted them but perished from smoke inhalation under a bed as the house suffered extensive damage.
