City leaders funded wells, an engineer secured city ownership of gas wells, and over 100 wells spurred growth. Annual Rock Show Set for Saturday

Flurry in Pentagon When Power Fails
A power failure caused a 16 minute disruption at the Pentagon. Lights went out at 9 28 a m with a fire alarm in some areas. Officials and workers moved to corridors while candles were lit in offices. An auxiliary system kept some lights on. By 9 44 a m power and alarms returned to normal and officials cited a simple power failure.

Two From Senior High To Attend Conference

Railroaders to Hold State Meeting Here in Chanute
Chanute will host the 1961 state convention of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen and auxiliary on October 13-14. About 500 people are expected at the Masonic Temple for the gathering, the auxiliary vice grand president Mrs. Jesse Snyder announced. the last Chanute convention was in 1939.

Turnpike Handles Record Car Volume During Thanksgiving
The Kansas Turnpike recorded a holiday traffic high of 90 887 vehicles over a five day Thanksgiving weekend. Four accidents occurred with two injuries including a broken wrist and rib. The Topeka bypass added 2 500 vehicles across two interchanges while Topeka south rose 4 000 and east fell 2 500. Troopers made 17 arrests, mostly for speeding, and 286 motorist services were performed.

Storms sweep Kansas with tornadoes and widespread damage
Severe weather ripped through Kansas Sunday night into Monday with a tornado on Concordia's southeast edge, winds up to 82 mph in Great Bend, and damage across multiple counties. A large theft at Pioneer Hardware, 24 W Walnut Chanute, saw 22 radios 12 TVs and three phonographs stolen after thieves cut through the floor and crawled in via a vent. Employee David Fehr found the break this morning. Police note doors were locked inside and outside. No theft insurance.
