Mrs. Jack Jordan of Savonburg found a quail inside her kitchen after a hunter’s gunshot shattered a top window pane. She noted nearby hunters were near the house while she washed dishes, and the bird’s entry came from outside through the glass during a pheasant hunting party in the Russell area.
Police sought a westbound truck after it sideswiped a 1961 Ford driven by Norma Laymon 34 of 417 East 11th about 7 30 last night. Laymon said the truck stopped at Lincoln intersection then turned north and struck the Falcon. Estimated car damage 500 dollars. A possible truck ID existed but no confirmation.
President Kennedy toured Ft. Stewart Homestead Air Force Base and Key West Navy Base assessing the Southeast buildup facing Cuba. At the sites he praised armed might and cited 250 rocket armed fighters at Homestead and 200 interceptors at Key West with the 1st Armored Division moving from Ft. Hood to Ft. At the US 59 and K39 junction two separate one car accidents injured three people. Julia Sapp 44 of Hepler was shaken and kept overnight at Girard hospital after her 1955 Oldsmobile left the highway and landed in a plowed field. Later George W Ensminger 36 of Fort Scott and Kenneth Pearson 33 also of Fort Scott were hurt when a 1961 Oldsmobile ran off at the intersection. Ensminger suffered a broken arm and Pearson a chest injury. both were hospitalized at Neosho Memorial in Chanute. A third passenger escaped injury. Damages were several hundred dollars.
