A dozen Republican governors met in Wichita to discuss 1976 issues while seven Democratic candidates met in Louisville for a similar discussion. About 2,000 attended the Democratic forum, with roughly the same number outside protesting court ordered busing. An antibusing leader addressed the forum but drew a cool reception.
A nine mile edge of a 15000 acre blaze swept toward Glendale igniting homes in Big Tujunga Canyon. Hundreds evacuated as firefighters from Orange County Burbank Pasadena and San Gabriel Valley battled 50 mph Santa Ana winds. Injured firefighters rose to nine with three severe burns. A separate fire burned Mt Baldy slopes forcing two dozen evacuations. another fire charred 20 acres near Santa Susana Pass with no structures lost.
Lynette Fromme's attorney says her defense could end abruptly if she refuses to testify about the attempted assassination of President Ford in Sacramento. If she testifies, seven witnesses including Ford would be called. otherwise the defense may rest after those seven.
At the First Democratic National Issues Convention in Louisville delegates heard seven declared candidates. Protests swelled to about 6,000 with 2,000 outside the hall. McGovern urged unity against busing as a racial division tactic and warned against amending the constitution to ban busing. Humphrey led an informal delegate poll, while McGovern signaled possible late primary involvement.
Daniel Patrick Moynihan weighs remaining as U.N. ambassador after clashes over his outspoken style and anger at nonaligned nations. President Ford and Henry Kissinger urging him to stay. aides say end of General Assembly term possible. Moynihan drew fire for calling Idi Amin racist and for a Zionism racism resolution.
U N Secretary General Kurt Waldheim, after four hours with President Hafez Assad, said the talks were very helpful and he would carry Syrian ideas to Israel. He planned to fly to Tel Aviv to press for progress toward a global Middle East settlement as U N peacekeeping in the Golan Heights faces questions.
Former Defense Secretary James Schlesinger says a Pentagon budget proposal would have cut 200,000 active servicemen, a plan he claims led to his dismissal. He warned on NBC Meet the Press that the USSR maintains strong ground and attack forces in Europe and near Russia.
The area faces colder conditions with highs in the low 30s and tonight's lows in the mid to upper teens. Tuesday remains chilly with similar high temperatures and northerly winds 15 to 25 mph shifting to light northeast tonight.
Providence report says Fidel Castro mourned Kennedy’s death as he believed an agreement to renew diplomatic relations existed. E Howard Hunt claimed a Miami interview cited a Castro household memory while Nixon aides link CIA reports to the event. Goodwin confirmed Kennedy Castro negotiations at UN level and Atwood involvement.
The commission will consider an EPA grant application for sewage treatment facility improvements and discuss vacation of an alley behind Pence's IGA on South Santa Fe. A local citizen will comment on the new electric rate ordinance at the 6 p.m. meeting in the Memorial Building.
