A local group asks residents to assist minor toy repairs for distribution by the welfare department to needy children this Christmas. Toys may be left at the fire department for return to the repair volunteers.
In Festus Missouri two cars on wet U S Highway 61 collided head on killing four people. Victims include Jerry E Kurka 48 Cape Girardeau his daughter Sally 15 and granddaughter Robin Rust and Lena Inez Beaujean 47 St Louis. Other family members were injured.
Three minor collisions reported by city police Saturday caused fender damage. A 1955 Lincoln driven by Helen Still struck Blanche Brant's 1957 Chevrolet on S Grant near Main as Still parked. A 1957 Mercury driven by Maude Gilliland backed into James Guffey's vehicle on S Evergreen near Main, damaging the right rear fender. A 1954 Ford owned by Stella Linville was hit from behind on N Garfield, with the other car leaving the scene. Police continue investigations.
Nine month old Vicky Ann Chilson of Topeka was electrocuted Sunday night after touching a metal lamp base and a capped gas pipe. Detective J. D. Cook said simultaneous contact with both caused the fatal shock.
The U S Census Bureau begins hiring about 1000 office workers in Parsons to tabulate the national farm census. Jobs pay 270 to 290 dollars monthly with advancement to 335. payroll projected over 32 million annually. Examinations will be held in multiple Kansas cities for applicants.

Topeka AP reports Kansas traffic fatalities tallied by the State Accident Records Section show 507 deaths to date in 1959, with 2 deaths in the last 48 hours ending at 9 a m today. The comparable period last year logged 497 fatalities.
Heavy rain and slides blocked major rail and highway routes across the Cascade Mountains. A Milwaukee Road train with 90 passengers was stranded for 10 hours and evacuated by bus to Spokane. A woman died in a Stevens Pass accident and several farm families were evacuated as rivers flooded northwest Washington valleys.
Alfred Mario Corradi an 18 year old from Overland Missouri admitted killing three friends at a farm home near Troy after planning to kill his girlfriend's mother. He said he expected the electric chair and faces three first degree murder charges for the deaths of Leroy Kappel his wife Mary Sue Kappel and Rosetta Willis.
Alfred Shahan aged 34 died in a Sunday early morning fire at his Wichita residence. Firemen believe he was asphyxiated while alone in the house. The incident is under investigation.
In Peoria Illinois four persons are missing after a fast moving blaze at the Arion Hotel and adjacent homes and taverns. Authorities report kerosene like fluid at both fire sites and a hearing on Sundays blaze has begun amid arson speculation.
Five Red Sovine Band members were injured in a single vehicle crash on the Turner Turnpike near Bristow Oklahoma. James Douglass Nicks, 18, Nashville was killed. Four others were listed in critical to serious condition with multiple injuries.

Thirteen year old George Martens, deaf, used sign language and his voice to tell how he killed eight year old Steven Moscoe. Coroner reports 47 stab wounds and a luring claim tied to damage to Martens bicycle. Martens, held by juvenile authorities, faces possible reform school confinement if ruled delinquent.
In New York and Detroit disc jockeys face dismissal over payola as WABC fires Alan Freed and WJBK ousts Thomas Clay while Dale Young resigns. NBC and Time Inc contend over quiz show fixes amid industry self scrutiny and station actions. Officials meet with WNEW-TV to discuss Freed amid calls for clear ethics.
Three additional shotgun shell cases near the Herbert Clutter home are explored as possible new clues in the murder case. Despite a thorough search, officers report no progress. Howard W. Fox urges Garden City to forgive, while Beverly Clutter, a 20 year old nursing student and daughter of the family, was married the prior Saturday at the church.
In Brookfield Missouri a fire at the Evangelical and United Brethren church killed Fire Chief James McClelland and injured two firefighters Kenneth Baer and W H Gordon Jr. Bricks rained down as the roof collapsed destroying the church. custodian Charles McDaniel found the fire. The cause remains under investigation.
Seven wide air corridors were closed to commercial and private planes to allow Strategic Air Command bombers low level training. The 20 mile wide by 500 mile long lanes will be bomber only at set weekday hours, mostly closed to civilians except one weekend opening. FAA announced the plan on November 4 with details provided to airports and airlines.
In Sweet Home Oregon police chase a clue to Rev Laurence Loftus his wife Ruth and son James who disappeared last Friday. A bus driver reported seeing a man and woman near a logging road entrance and a small foreign car matching the Loftus vehicle.
Postmaster General Arthur E. Summerfield announced new parcel post rates will start Feb 1, well after Christmas mailings. The ICC approved the increases averaging 17.1 percent and totaling about 88 million dollars annually.
Col Pa uwel Monat a top Polish intelligence official asked for asylum in the United States with his family. The State Department said the application is being processed in the usual way. Monat defected some months ago and is believed to have been the intelligence chief of Polish military attaches worldwide. He is in protective custody. CIA declined to confirm his flight or protest from Poland.
Floyd Harold Heflin, a Kansas City man, died in a two car crash at the U S 69 and Kenneth Road junction near Stanley Kansas. Five other motorists, including four women from Charles F Curry Mortgage Co Kansas City, were injured while returning from Oswego after a weekend on business.
Two weekend fatalities are reported in Kansas. Airman Paul L. Varney, 21, of Forbes AFB Topeka died in a head on collision with a truck carrying 30 000 pounds of dynamite. the dynamite did not explode and truck driver Jazz Orton of Joplin Missouri was uninjured. Howard Selman, about 54, of Ellinwood Kansas, was killed when his car was struck by a Rock Island train at a crossing near Arlington. Seven people died in Missouri over the same period.
The Communications Commission approved Southwestern Bell Telephone Co of St. Louis to acquire the independent exchange facilities of Dover Telephone Co in Dover Kansas for 4 150 dollars. The Dover company is in receivership with William A Eddy Jr acting as receiver.
