Underground Cable Lays Long-Distance Dial Network

A 78 mile underground cable linking Chanute and Pittsburg nears completion as part of a statewide long-distance system. The project will extend to Iola Yates Center and Eureka with Parsons as a hub, enabling dial calls by city code plus numbers.

Kennedy to meet Johnson for transition talks at LBJ Ranch

President elect Kennedy travels to Texas for talks with Vice President elect Lyndon Johnson on power transition from Eisenhower era. They plan to discuss a congressional program and the handover of the administration with Clark Clifford reporting on prior meetings. Kennedy changes Thanksgiving plans to stay in Washington. Mrs Kennedy expects a second child late this month or early December.

Death of Charles L Woods due to internal injuries

Charles L Woods aged 26 of El Dorado died from internal injuries after his car struck a pier on a Kansas Turnpike overpass on November 10. County coroner Dr. B E White said a pathological exam found the cause to be a ruptured liver. Earlier reports suggested a prior blow may have contributed.

Coloradoan Killed In Kansas Accident

An Arvada Colorado man Louis Mills 66 was killed Tuesday night after being struck by a car along Highway 36 near Elwood Kansas. The driver Larry Patrick Cunningham 18 of St Joseph Missouri struck Mills as he walked beside the highway. authorities said Mills died at the scene.

Woman receives new hands after Nantucket crash

Lita Levine of Brooklyn survived the 1958 Nantucket crash in which 24 died. After 37 operations and years of recovery she was awarded a 375000 settlement and now plans to shop for drapes, work again, and learn to use plastic artificial hands with rings and gloves.

Fire hoses used against anti integration protest in New Orleans

Police and fire crews clashed with demonstrators in downtown New Orleans as officers tried to disperse a crowd opposing school integration. Water streams were directed at protesters near the Board of Education office while the chants declared rejection of integration.

Fire Department Makes Two Runs

Firefighters were called to 718 S Grant to extinguish a car fire of undetermined origin owned by James Fur nee. The interior of the 1941 model car was gutted in the blaze. A separate run occurred at Burlington garment plant 111 W 3rd where a 24 year old man from Wichita was injured by smoke in a scrap cloth cutting area near the Atlas missile site. Another incident reported a Tuesday night collision west of Wilson with an air-ruptured garment.

Water Plant Open House at New Municipal Plant

City Manager R. J. Hayes announced an open house Sunday for public inspection of the new municipal water plant. Tours will run from 1 to 5 p.m. plant personnel will conduct tours and refreshments will be served. The plant is at 9th and Katy.

London AP reports Sir Winston Churchill, age 85, broke a bone in his back in a fall at his home. A household spokesman said he will remain in bed for a little time as he recovers.

Man Held Here After Break-ins

Bennie Vance, 20, of 1017 N Steuben, held in city jail as a suspect in break ins or attempted break ins at four Chanute businesses overnight. Police report he confessed after lead from Officers Record and Fullerton sighting him fleeing Barker's Dairy Bar. Losses listed: Caldwell Furniture $5.77 and Rubow's Market $3 to $4. Farm Service Store window raised but no entry.

Robbery at Topeka Western Union Office After Brief Visit

A night clerk at the Topeka Western Union telegraph office was robbed by a man who chatted for about 30 minutes before pulling a revolver and taking between 700 and 1000 dollars from a safe. The suspect, described as a about 30 year old Black man, claimed he was awaiting a money order from relatives.

Three Vehicle Crash on Evergreen Damages Cars

A three vehicle crash near 5th on Evergreen yesterday noon caused minor damage to a 1958 Chevrolet driven by Chester Bowman 17 and a 1949 Ford driven by Peggy Ostrander 16. Ramsey 22 owned a 1954 Mercury with lesser damage. No injuries reported and police investigated.

A cold front moved through Kansas Tuesday bringing colder air and clear skies statewide. Southeast Kansas saw heavy rains up to 2.20 inches at Coffeyville, with several locations exceeding an inch. Overnight lows dipped to 20 in western Kansas. Pittsburg reached 42. Rain totals included Independence 1.06, Cherryvale 1.18, Altamont 1.24, McCune 1.49, Pittsburg 1.20, Walnut 0.93, Ft. Scott 0.73 inches. Forecast calls for fair conditions today through Thursday with a nightly low near 30 and highs in the 60s Thursday.
