Chanute housing plan eyed for 1975 95 review

Carter’s church opens doors to blacks who want to worship

In Plains Georgia the Plains Baptist Church voted 2 to 1 to admit all worshippers, overruling a 1965 ban on Negroes. Jimmy Carter helped steer the decision during a tense members meeting while three Ku Klux Klan members attended outside. The vote also kept pastor Bruce Edwards and set up a church committee on membership applications.
