A vapor cloud from a Titan II missile site malfunction prompted authorities to close the Kansas Highway 55 and U.S. 77 junction about 25 miles southeast of Wichita. No injuries or damage reported. An oxidizer part of Titan fuel spilled near Titan II Complex No. 7 at the Wichita vicinity, according to McConnell Air Force Base officials.
The Neo sho Cottonwood Flood Control and Water Conservation Assn will meet in Burlington. A tall man armed with a gun robbed the drive in branch of South gate State Bank at 75th and State Line in Prairie Village Kansas about 8 30 a m seizing about 15000 from two female employees and making off with a hostage 40 year old William J Frey Kansas City He used the hostage s pickup for his getaway then abandoned it He fled into Missouri with conflicting reports on whether he ran on foot or escaped in another car The bandit was described as white 6 foot 1 inch 225 pounds wearing a light raincoat and dark pants He first loitered at a service station before accosting the pickup driver at the bank The hostage was released unharmed a half block from the bank Coppage police report notes the bank opened at 7 a m.

In Biloxi Mississippi Louis Paul Matranga 33 crawled from a rear window when two insurance agents arrived. Believing they were FBI agents he fled back inside and was later arrested by actual FBI agents. He had served six months of a 12 year term before escaping last June.

Singer Frank Sinatra became the second show business figure to testify before a federal grand jury in Kansas City. The investigation's nature was not disclosed. Sinatra’s friend Sammy Davis Jr. had previously appeared, and Davis was near the jury for about two hours.
Police said Ralph Pierro 25 hurled a pump kin from a fourth floor window missing his wife Lorraine and fatally striking their month old son Ralph Jr The incident occurred Thursday Pierro was charged with homicide and awaited arraignment in New York AP News
