President Eisenhower, leaving Denver for Washington, expresses gratitude for prayers and aid during his illness. He says the experience showed him how good people are as he boards the Columbine Ill ramp in damp cold weather.
The eighth grade class of St Patrick's Junior High School directed by Herbert Snender publishes its first mimeographed issue The Shamrock to appear biweekly The staff includes Philip Brazen Russell Corbitt Judy Ward Mary Casey Teddy Ponce Don Papst Brian Haller and others The effort marks a historic school journalism milestone and reflects student leadership.
In Coffeyville a flour mill incident left Clyde Skaggs dead and James Reidy plus Jack Brown hospitalized after being overcome by gas fumes while ventilating the mill. Police Hobart Thomas and Le Roy Tosh also treated. Brown remained in satisfactory condition. Fire Chief Cal Durand said they wore gas masks and that the cause of the exposure is under investigation. Cottage Grove meeting notice follows.
Charles Oliver Dorris, 69, perished in a trailer home fire in Wyandotte County Kansas City Kansas. Firemen reported a kerosene stove explosion caused the blaze.
A record 3,174 entries flood the contest as Little Tinker edges through a tough puzzle to claim a rising prize of 310 dollars. The word challenge runs into its 29th week with no solution yet and a large field of solvers remains at large. Deadline for entries is 5 p.m. Wednesday.
Chanute held a Veterans Day observance starting with a 10 a.m. parade from City Park along Main Street to Steuben intersection led by a color guard from Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. The line included the Kansas National Guard Battery, Boy and Girl Scouts, drum and bugle corps from local high schools, and the Senior High School Band. Hundreds watched as Main Street business houses were closed and flags lined the route. After the parade the school band performed at Memorial Auditorium for an 11 a.m. program sponsored by veterans groups.
The Topeka forecast notes increasing cloudiness and colder temperatures with possible snow Saturday. Tonight lows near 3 with highs in the lower 30s. Five day outlook expects 8 to 12 degrees below normal with light to moderate precipitation totals mainly west and east regions.
Cushing Oklahoma. A broken water main led to a gas furnace fume exposure that endangered a Lee Harris family. Water department worker Bill Vannostran knocked and found them barely awake, calling a doctor. If he arrived 30 minutes later, it could have been too late.
Leslie Gallion of the Blue Comet varsity was treated at Neosho Memorial Hospital after a game with Fort Scott. Reports say he suffered a jammed vertebra in his neck and is in a traction unit. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Leslie F Gallion of 402 North Garfield.
Kiwanians at the Masonic Temple dining hall prepared for the annual Pancake Day set to run from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. They expect to serve about 3,300 cakes to 1,000 to 1,100 customers with 40 club members aiding. Proceeds fund aid to underprivileged children in the community.
A man and his wife narrowly escaped asphyxiation when Loren Goldsworth 25 and his wife were overcome by gas fumes. His mother, alerted by a coworker, rushed to their Colby home and revived them after the fumes from a gas burner rendered them unconscious. Goldsworth remained in critical condition while his wife recovered to fair condition. Their baby and a dog were unharmed.
About 2000 people visited the First National Bank open house held yesterday from 2 to 7 p m. Officers and directors were introduced by E E Lofgren and L S Wilson. Ray Painter and Dale Painter of Asteron Okla recently bought a controlling stake. Prizes included four $50 and $25 savings bonds to Beverly Clemans Eric R 1 Gail A Malson Mrs O H Bates and Mrs Harold Casper. 600 roses were given to women visitors while men received cigars and children balloons candy and pencils.
Six Minnesota high school students died in a grade crossing crash near Plato. Sheriff Leon Odegaard named five victims Milton Brelje, Maurice Olson both 18 of Plato Robert Luedtke 18 and Roger Frauendiest 17 of New Auburn and Margaret Fuller 18 of Plato. The sixth girl’s identity could not be confirmed immediately due to severe mutilation.
A panel of veterans from World War II, World War I, and Korea discuss what Veterans Day should mean. They emphasize remembrance, respect for the fallen, public observance, and a peaceful future, with calls for proper observance, parades, and patriotic spirit.
City commissioners heard that final decision on Chanute as a stopping point on the Ozark Air Lines route from St. Louis to Wichita has not been made by the Civil Aeronautics Board. A 10 day protest period starts Nov 7, with CAB hearings in Washington last Monday recommending Ozark certification and Chanute a 3 year temporary certificate.
Rome reports Egypt has a contract with an Italian firm for 30 Vampire jet fighters possibly signed six months ago. If delivered, Egypt would receive arms from a NATO member and from the Communist bloc, raising Western concerns over a new arms buildup amid Israeli Egyptian tensions.
