Chanute High debaters sweep novice tourney at Garnett
Chanute High School debaters led by Gary Holt won the Garnett novice tournament with 15 wins and five losses, defeating nine rival squads including Shawnee Mission East and Shawnee Mission South. Individual results crowned Janice Cook and Arlene Bower second, Karen Dunlap and Rita Farrell fourth, with Farrell as top speaker. City plans major work on Plummer Road

Safari Museum Reopens to Celebrate Belle Leighty’s 100th
The Safari Museum reopens next Tuesday with free admission to honor Belle Leighty who would have turned 100. The remodeled first floor will display Johnson family photographs from Martin and Osa Johnsons travels in the 1920s and 1930s. Barbara Henshall notes donations of Johnson materials are welcome for display. Membership drives run during Leighty’s birthday week with tiers from five to one hundred dollars. Original Johnson photos are copied for public albums while originals are preserved for accreditation.
