The Emergency Board urged 48,000 railroad shop workers to accept a two stage five percent wage increase for the year and allowed a 20 cent an hour raise for highly skilled mechanics. It warned negotiations remain difficult and a nationwide strike could still loom in a month, with current wages at 3.59 dollars per hour.
Arab guerrillas blew up the Transarabian Pipeline from Saudi Arabia to Sidon in southern Lebanon shortly after a cease-fire with the Lebanese army began. The blast damaged two feet of the Tapline. Ten hours later no violations were reported at Lebanon's eastern border with Syria amid fighting between the PLO guerrillas and the Lebanese army.
Pro Nixon supporters from California to New York form groups claiming to speak for the silent majority as a second wave of antiwar demonstrations looms. Spiro Agnew's sharp rhetoric fuels pro Nixon rallies including a Washington Freedom Rally on November 11 and National Confidence Week starting November 10.
In Washington AP reports the Senate may not act on the direct election amendment. The House passed the measure September 18 by 339 to 70 but the Senate Judiciary Committee has taken no action, leaving 1972 election prospects tied to the electoral college system.
Washington reports that the herbicide 2 4 5 T used on about 3 million acres in the United States faces scrutiny as a possible health risk. White House adviser Dr. Lee A. DuBridge said the Agriculture Department will ban its use on food crops by January 1 unless the FDA sets tolerances for consumer products.
Herman Michigan reports 15.4 inches of snow this season in Baraga County. Last winter the town set a Midwest record with 298.6 inches, though only 7.1 inches had fallen by November 1. Ironwood and Sault Sainte Marie also logged notable amounts with 15.3 inches and 8 inches respectively.
Alvin Buffington, driving to a feed store near Carthage, untangled a doe from a fence but fell. The buck charged as the deer rejoined the fray, and Buffington kept a safe distance while the doe freed herself. Both deer then jumped the fence and fled.
In New Orleans the Barbers Union Local 496 warns members that long hair and fugitives from the bathtub are driving a lice problem. The monthly bulletin notes history repeating with head lice becoming a nuisance again.
Betty Lou Heilman, 17, Thayer High School senior, won the Junior Miss Pageant at the Senior High auditorium. About 450 attended. She is the daughter of Harold Heilman and wife and plans a journalism career, with a chance to compete in the State Junior Miss Pageant in Belleville in November.

Italian authorities questioned hijacker Rafael Minichiello in Rome as FBI scrutiny intensified after a crew dispute aboard the Trans World Airlines jet. Pilot Captain Donald J. Cook Jr. accused FBI officials of ignoring his refueling instructions at Kennedy Airport.
The Neosho Junior College Board of Trustees will meet Tuesday at 8 p.m. in the board room on the campus. Agenda items include reports from student council officers and faculty members, discussion of a state memorandum concerning student and employee conduct, proposals for next year's calendar, and acceptance of a car for the driver education program.
The Thayer Growers Association elected a ten member charter group to seek new and higher technical assistance grants from the Ozarks Regional Commission. About twenty growers and town leaders attended the meeting in ATA hall with Fred Harris Charitte Earl Shell Verdigris Valley Pilot Farm Project Richard Liebert Cof feyville and other local growers. The group, allied with Farm Products Management Inc, will draft loan and grant proposals for submission to the regional act in coming weeks.
North Vietnamese forces launched coordinated assaults on U.S. artillery outposts in the Central Highlands near Bong Son and An Khe. The attacks left 26 enemy soldiers killed and 1 American dead with 8 wounded as U.S. commanders warned of a potential broader campaign targeting Bu Prang and Due Lep camps along the Cambodian border.
