Rain gods have smiled on Chanute with abundant moisture in 1967, recording 43.84 inches by October and surpassing the 38.40 inch average. Monthly totals show a wet year with notable months including June 9.68 and September 7.60, exceeding annual totals dating back to 1961.
The Kansas State Teachers Association delegates meet in Salina and Pittsburg and approve a unified membership proposal requiring local members to join the National Education Association. The plan goes to the state examinations board of directors. R Darrell Little of Lowell Elementary Coffeyville is elected vice president of the Pittsburg section.
An 18 year old St Paul youth Danny Arthur Herod faces car theft charges filed in Independence along with a federal warrant and detainer. He and two 17 year old juveniles from St Paul and Coffeyville were arrested Sunday night. Cars stolen in Independence Coffeyville Caney Dewey Okla Cherryvale and Humboldt Iowa were recovered. One vehicle found near the Neosho River in St Paul with its accessories removed.
Police and county juvenile officer are probing a 15-year-old boy missing from home after an overnight absence and reports of a beating. Preliminary inquiries suggest alcohol involvement with beer bought by an older boy.
An intercepted note shows a mother threatening to withhold her son's allowance over chores. The text also includes a boy muttering about a congress rush on a children's allowance program. The item reflects domestic and political discourse of the era.
The U S dairy industry faces competition from inexpensive filled or imitation milk made with vegetable fats and skim milk. The National Milk Producers Federation will discuss regulation at its Miami Beach convention November 12 to 16. Police estimate damage at 300 dollars to a 1961 Comet driven by Gary Shaw at 910 South Central. Shaw hit a parked 1955 Chevrolet owned by Floyd Gates in front of the Gates residence. Chevrolet damage 95 dollars. Shaw was delivering a newspaper route.
Hazardous driving and heavy snow warnings extended across the western half of Kansas as a wintry storm moves in from the northwest. Expect up to four inches in northwestern Kansas with possible five more tonight, and continued light to moderate snow southeastward through Friday morning.
Viet Cong troops failed to capture Loc Ninh district town after a massive assault. Allied forces reported 832 enemy dead in five days, with 8 American and 23 South Vietnamese killed and 74 wounded. Prisoners and weapons, including RPG7 launchers, were seized.
Allen Van Alstyne, manager of operations, told Rotary at Tioga hotel that Alcorn Corp. in Chanute has greatly expanded its manufacturing site. New equipment includes a 260 ft diameter tower crane a 600 cfm air compressor 3 500 sq ft of sheltered storage for refractory materials high capacity spray painting gear and advanced welding apparatus. A 100 by 140 ft additional building is planned to house sand blasting painting and refractory insulation with drafting work broadened to connect New York engineering and Chanute shop. He noted heater components and sections reach up to 80 tons and heaters cylinders range 7 to 25 ft in diameter and up to 76 ft long with shipments to California Gulf coast and eastern U S. Continued discussion noted.
The Senate Finance Committee endorsed a Social Security increase of at least 15 percent with financed taxes. The proposal mirrors President Johnsons plan, proposing higher raises for the lowest bracket. Differences with the House version include payroll tax rate timing and wage-base amounts, to be resolved in a House-Senate conference.
An eight-engine B52 Strato fortress from Grand Forks crashed near Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome New York. Seven crewmen died and one was found alive but uninjured. the bomber carried no weapons and reportedly ejected crew members as engine trouble was reported.
City park workers battled to corral a deer kept in Santa Fe Park. Police reported numerous calls about deer on the loose and have had to drive them away from the highway late at night to protect traffic. Motorists are urged to watch for deer in the park vicinity.
Soldier Jacky C. Bayne 22 of Fort Mill DC was pronounced dead in Chu Lai after boobytrap wounds. An embalmer’s incision revived him. he later recovered at Walter Reed Hospital. His mother, Bunia Bayne, kept vigil and he had written letters from Vietnam expressing gratitude for life.
Laura Blair, a Jackson County Juvenile Court ward, had her esophagus and pharynx damaged when she swallowed lye at age two. Doctors at Children's Mercy Hospital performed reconstructive surgery transferring colon to link mouth and stomach. She is recovering and can taste food again.
A two car collision on K177 south of Cottonwood Falls Kansas killed Albert Cunningham 63 of Littleton Cole and Rose Irvine of Manhattan. Olin Ediger 58 of Wichita the driver of the second car was hospitalized in critical condition in Emporia hospital.
Dan E. Hein, 74, of Durham Kansas, was killed when struck by a car near Lehigh Kansas after escaping injuries in a minor one car crash, according to the highway patrol.
