Three deaths found in stock pond near Coffeyville
The Montgomery County couple Leonard Abbott Rees and his wife were found dead in a farm stock pond. Coroner Mau rice K. Borkland ruled death by own action. The couple’s sons discovered tracks to the pond and alerted authorities as deputies recovered the bodies. Rees, 48, had closed his Coffeyville farm supply house on Oct. 6 and was to start a new job in Abilene. He previously served as Riley County agricultural agent and later did similar work in Ottawa and Independence.

Five Climbers Die in Bavarian Alps Crash
Five climbers including three young girls plunged about 600 feet to their deaths on Mount Unters in the Bavarian Alps near Berchtesgaden. Four bodies were recovered from a crevasse after they fell while attempting the south wall climb. A fifth body remained missing as snow and low clouds hampered the search. A guide alerted rescuers, and officials called it possibly Germany’s worst mountain accident since World War I.
