Woman Survives 19 Days After Plane Crash on Ferris Mountain

Mrs. Dalton LeMasurier, wife of Duluth radio station president, survived 19 days on Ferris Mountain after a May crash near Rawlins Wyoming. She was found by a seven‑man rescue party, wearing her husband’s clothes and with minimal nourishment. The wreckage burned for an hour, then a rainstorm dampened the fire. She endured storms, frostbite, sunburn, and malnutrition while drifting through deep snow.

Road work bids approved totaling 7.3 million dollars in Kansas

The Kansas Highway Commission approved bids totaling 7 308 000 for state highway and county secondary road improvements in eastern and south central Kansas. Projects include bridges on the Marais Des Cygnes between Ottawa and Olathe, K 96 upgrades from Columbus west, and US routes in Rush Ellis Edwards and Wilson counties. Freete Construction Co. won several contracts with bids around 470 000 to 183 000, plus maintenance sealing work across 12 counties.

TOPEKA The body of 17 year old Janice Todd was recovered yesterday after she drowned Monday in the Kaw River. She and three companions waded near a sandbar when she fell in and disappeared.

Neosho River Rises as Heavy Rainfalls Hit Area

Reported 14 foot rise with river crest near 22.74 feet upstream in Neosho River valley. Residents described hail up to walnut size and flash overflow on Big Creek while rainfall total reached up to 7 inches east of town. Patrols aided motorists stranded by high water as forecasts warned of continued showers and cooler temps.

Arkansas youth Robert Gates sentenced for armed robbery

Charles Francis Gates, 20, of Arkansas, pleaded guilty to first degree armed robbery and related forgery charges in a district court before Judge B M Dunham. He received five to 104% years at the Hutchinson state industrial school for armed robbery and not more than 10 years on each forgery count, to run concurrently. He had attempted a hold up at a Katy station in Chanute and passed a $200 forged check at the Bank of Commerce there. Gates is on parole from the state industrial school.

Storm Forecast For Eastern Kansas and Missouri

Weather Bureau bulletin warns of a developing thunderstorm activity in southwest and central Kansas with funnel clouds reported. Severe thunderstorms and a few tornadoes are likely from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. CST along a line from Hutchinson Kansas to south of Kirksville Missouri, threatening eastern Kansas and northwest Missouri communities.

Chanute Population Drops to 10 401 in 1957

Deputy assessors report Erie Chanute lead county losses with Chanute at 10 401 this year down from 10 504 last year. Erie counts 1 342 vs 1 669 in 1956. Other towns show mixed changes with Galesburg down eight and St Paul up 26. Two townships gain Centerville 15 and Walnut Grove six. Tioga Township falls 66. Farms decline by 84 to 1 321 from 1 405.
